Chapter 18 - Shadows Return

The grand opening of the Eleanor Mercer Medical Center in Hollow Creek was a massive victory for the entire region. Hundreds of local mountain residents, timber workers, and state dignitaries gathered in the newly revitalized town center to celebrate the opening of the state-of-the-art facility.
Hollow Creek Station—where Nathan had first spotted his mother carrying firewood two years prior—had been completely restored. The old pump canopy was now a beautiful historic park monument featuring a bronze plaque commemorating Eleanor’s incredible resilience and strength.
As the crowd applauded, Eleanor cut the bright red ribbon, surrounded by Nathan, Alexander, and Marcus.
However, as the evening reception wound down and the guests began to depart, Marcus approached Nathan with a slight frown on his face.
"What is it, Marcus?" Nathan asked, stepping away from a group of local doctors.
"We just caught a signal spike on the local radio frequencies," Marcus reported in a hushed tone. "An encrypted burst transmission originated from the old logging road two miles north."
Nathan’s smile faded slightly, his instincts instantly sharp. "Julian Sterling's men are all in federal prison, Marcus. Who else could be operating out here?"
"I don't know, sir," Marcus said, pulling up a signal location map on his device. "It could be squatters, or it could be remaining foreign liquidators from Apex Global trying to retrieve hidden physical assets before the land transfer is finalized."
"Alexander and I will take a look," Nathan decided. "Mom is safe inside the medical center with four guards. Let's resolve this discreetly."
Nathan, Alexander, and Marcus boarded a small electric off-road vehicle, quietly driving up the dark mountain trail toward the old logging road.
As they rounded a dense thicket of pines, they spotted a single grey utility vehicle parked near an abandoned equipment shed. Sitting on the tailgate was an elderly man with a weathered face, wearing a worn oilskin coat, holding a small radio transmitter.
Nathan stepped out of the vehicle, shining a flashlight on the man. "Can we help you with something?"
The old man flinched, dropping the radio. He looked up, his eyes widening as he recognized Nathan and Alexander. "Mr. Mercer..."
"Who are you?" Nathan asked cautiously as Marcus stepped forward.
"My name is Thomas... Thomas Reed," the old man stammered, holding up his trembling, dirt-stained hands. "I was Arthur Mercer's head groundskeeper at Blackridge thirty years ago..."
Nathan and Alexander exchanged a sharp look.
"You were here when my mother was taken?" Nathan asked, his voice tight.
"I... I was forced to help build the underground cabin," Thomas confessed, tears of regret swelling in his weathered eyes. "Arthur paid me off and forced me to leave the state under threat of death. But when I heard on the news that Mrs. Eleanor survived... and that you opened this clinic... I had to come back."
Thomas reached into his coat, pulling out a rusted steel key on a brass ring.
"What is that?" Alexander asked.
May you like
"It's the key to Arthur's second private safe," Thomas revealed, his voice trembling. "Hidden deep inside the old iron mine shafts at the top of the ridge. Arthur stored physical gold bullion and original foreign land deeds worth millions up there—assets he held in case the corporate bank accounts were ever frozen."
Nathan looked at the rusted key in the palm of the old man's hand. The final piece of Arthur Mercer’s hidden, corrupt legacy was sitting right before them.
