Chapter 7 - The Midnight Intruder

The private penthouse suite on the top floor of the Grand Regent Hotel in downtown Charlotte was heavily secured. Marcus had arranged for four armed private security officers—former teammates from his contractor days—to patrol the corridor and monitor the elevator banks.
Inside the sprawling suite, Eleanor sat on a plush velvet sofa, drinking tea while wrapped in a warm fleece blanket. For the first time in thirty-one years, she was safe, warm, and surrounded by modern comforts, yet her eyes constantly scanned the door with lingering trauma.
Nathan stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, staring down at the glowing cityscape. The financial district of Charlotte looked tranquil from sixty stories up, but beneath the shimmering glass towers, a war was raging for control of his family’s multi-billion-dollar empire.
Agent Richard Vance sat at the glass dining table, surrounded by stacks of financial records, photographs, and the worn journals Nathan had retrieved from Eleanor’s cabin. Two digital recording devices sat active between them, capturing Eleanor’s formal sworn deposition.
"Mrs. Mercer," Agent Vance said gently, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "For the record, can you re-confirm the exact names of the foreign entities that Arthur Mercer and Julian Sterling used to funnel the stolen corporate funds?"
"The primary offshore entity was called Meridian Holdings," Eleanor stated clearly, her voice gaining strength with every passing hour. "It was registered in the Cayman Islands in 1993. Julian Sterling created three subsidiary accounts under the names of dummy timber companies operating in North Carolina. They transferred over four hundred million dollars out of Mercer Enterprises' pension funds and emergency reserves."
Agent Vance flipped through a folder, his expression growing grimmer by the second. "This aligns perfectly with an active investigation our department opened six months ago regarding Apex Global. We knew Apex was a front for money laundering, but we were missing the internal link showing corporate insider knowledge. Your journals fill every single gap."
"What about my wife?" Nathan asked, stepping over to the table. His voice was cold, stripped of all emotion. "What is Sloane’s role in this?"
Agent Vance pulled up a file on his encrypted laptop and turned the screen toward Nathan.
Displayed on the monitor were bank transfer records and wire authorizations dating back three years.
"Sloane wasn't just your wife, Nathan," Vance explained grimly. "She was Julian Sterling's niece by marriage. Her real surname is Sterling. Her marriage to you seven years ago was orchestrated from the very beginning. She was placed in your life to ensure that if Arthur died unexpectedly, she could influence your decisions and keep you from looking too closely at the corporate ledgers."
Nathan stared at the screen, a bitter, hollow feeling expanding in his chest. Seven years of marriage, seven years of shared dreams, holidays, and intimacy—all of it had been a cold, calculated corporate infiltration.
"She was feeding Julian information about your daily schedule, your personal accounts, and your legal strategy," Vance continued. "The tracking device on the Rolls-Royce was activated from her mobile phone at 5:14 PM yesterday."
Nathan took a deep, steadying breath. The grief he had felt hours ago was completely gone, replaced by a pure, blinding clarity. "Where is she now?"
"She returned to your primary residence in Myers Park late last night," Vance replied. "She believes you and your mother were eliminated in the mountain cabin. Julian Sterling has called an emergency board meeting for 9:00 AM this morning to execute the Apex Global merger and appoint Sloane as temporary executor of the Mercer estate due to your 'unfortunate disappearance.'"
Nathan looked at his watch. It was 4:30 AM.
"They think they've won," Nathan said softly.
"They have no idea you're alive," Agent Vance agreed. "We have enough evidence right now to issue arrest warrants for Julian Sterling, Sloane, and six key board members. But if we move too early, Sterling's lawyers will tie this up in appellate court for a decade while foreign assets are cleared."
"Then we don't move early," Nathan decided, his hazel eyes flashing with dark determination. "We let them hold their meeting. We let them cast their votes. We let them commit the grand felony on camera in front of the entire board."
"Nathan," Eleanor said softly, standing up from the sofa and walking over to lay a gentle hand on her son's arm. "They are dangerous men. They have already tried to kill us twice."
Nathan took his mother's hand and held it tightly against his cheek. "They tried to destroy our family for thirty years, Mom. Today, it ends."
Suddenly, a dull thump echoed from the outer hallway, followed by the muffled sound of a scuffle.
Marcus instantly drew his weapon, stepping in front of Nathan and Eleanor. "Stay back!"
The suite door swung open violently. A man in black security gear stumbled backward into the room, collapsing onto the carpet.
Standing in the doorway, holding a silenced pistol and wearing a dark leather jacket, was Julian Sterling’s chief head of corporate security—a ruthless fixer named Victor Vance.
"Well, well," Victor sneered, stepping into the suite, his cold eyes locking onto Nathan. "Julian had a feeling you were too slippery to die in that wood cabin, Nathan."
Before Victor could raise his weapon, Marcus reacted with incredible speed. He dropped low, firing two precise rounds from his suppressed handgun.
*Thump! Thump!*

Victor’s eyes widened in shock as the heavy rounds struck his body armor. He stumbled backward into the doorframe. Marcus closed the distance in a heartbeat, disarming the hitman with a brutal wrist lock and slamming him face-first into the hardwood floor, securing him with heavy zip-ties within seconds.
Nathan stepped forward, looking down at the defeated assassin. "Tell Julian I'll be ten minutes early for the meeting."
