Chapter 14 - Divorce and Retribution

Three weeks after the dramatic courtroom hearing, the legal dust surrounding Mercer Enterprises began to settle into a new, victorious reality.

The formal divorce proceedings between Nathan and Sloane Mercer were finalized in record time under expedited state emergency statutes. Because of her felony convictions and proven participation in corporate fraud against the family, the prenuptial agreement was entirely voided. Sloane received not a single penny, no real estate, and no spousal support. Every piece of jewelry, luxury vehicle, and asset purchased with Mercer funds was liquidated and reallocated into the family trust.

Sitting in a stark visitation room at the Mecklenburg County Federal Detention Facility, Sloane sat behind a thick plexiglass partition, wearing an orange jumpsuit, her hair unwashed, her face pale and hollow.

The heavy door opened, and Nathan stepped inside, wearing a dark grey suit. He sat down calmly on the stool opposite her.

Sloane grabbed the plastic phone receiver frantically, pressing it against her ear. Nathan slowly picked up his receiver.

"Nathan!" Sloane sobbed, her hand smudging against the glass. "Thank God you came! My lawyers say I'm facing twenty years! Please, Nathan... tell the prosecutor you don't want to press charges! Tell them I was tricked by Julian!"

Nathan listened to her pathetic pleas with cold detachment. "I didn't come here to talk about your trial, Sloane. I came to deliver the final decree."

Nathan slid a thin manila envelope through the document slot beneath the window.

"Those are the finalized divorce papers," Nathan said coldly. "Signed by the state judge an hour ago. You are officially no longer a Mercer. Your name has been legally changed back to Sloane Sterling."

Sloane stared at the documents, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. "Nathan... please... seven years of marriage! Did none of it mean anything to you?"

"It meant everything to me," Nathan replied softly, his voice cutting through her lies like a razor. "Until I realized every kiss, every smile, and every word you said was part of a contract written by Julian Sterling. You watched me mourn my mother for seven years, knowing she was living in a cold shack in the woods. You laughed at her when she carried firewood past our car."

Sloane flinched as if slapped, looking down in shame.

"You will spend the next twenty years in a federal prison cell, Sloane," Nathan continued, his tone deadly calm. "And every single day, when you look at those concrete walls, I want you to remember the concrete blocks your uncle buried in my mother's casket."

Nathan placed the phone receiver back onto its hook, stood up without waiting for her reply, and walked out of the visitation room, leaving his past behind forever.

Outside the prison gates, Marcus was waiting beside a brand-new dark blue Rolls-Royce Phantom.

"Where to, Mr. Mercer?" Marcus asked, holding the rear door open.

"Back to Blackridge, Marcus," Nathan smiled warmly, stepping into the car. "We have a home to rebuild."

When Nathan arrived back at the estate, the transformation was already underway. Hundreds of skilled craftsmen, architects, and landscapers were working diligently to restore the historic manor house. The damaged east wing was being rebuilt not as a gloomy corporate fortress, but as a bright, sprawling family sanctuary filled with floor-to-ceiling glass windows that overlooked the mountain valley.

Eleanor and Alexander were sitting together on the sunny patio, reviewing architectural blueprints for the new Mercer Foundation headquarters.

Alexander looked up, stepping forward with a warm smile. "How did it go?"

"It's finished," Nathan declared, taking a deep breath of the crisp mountain air. "The past is officially closed."

Eleanor took Nathan’s hand, pulling both of her sons close to her. "Then today, our new life begins."
