Chapter 10 - The Glass Palace Crumbles

The heavy silence that descended upon the seventieth-floor executive penthouse was so profound you could hear the steady patter of raindrops against the bulletproof glass windows. Victoria Vance-Sinclair stood frozen by her mahogany desk, her eyes locked onto the federal indictment document resting on the marble surface. The color had completely drained from her face, leaving her stark white against the dark, minimalist backdrop of the room.
'This... this is absurd,' Victoria stammered, her voice losing its icy composure for a fraction of a second before her natural arrogance surged back to mask her panic. She forced a stiff, brittle laugh, shaking her head. 'You think a couple of forged documents and some wild, baseless accusations from a disgruntled small-town girl are going to bring down Vanguard Global Interests? I have senators on speed dial. I have federal appellate judges in my pocket—oh, wait, you managed to lock up Robert, didn't you? Doesn't matter. The entire board of directors will have this injunction thrown out before the stock market opens tomorrow morning.'
I didn't flinch. I took two slow steps closer to her desk, my eyes locked onto hers with predatory coldness. 'Your board of directors can't help you, Victoria, because twenty minutes ago, federal agents executed simultaneous search warrants at all three of your primary offshore banking subsidiaries in the Cayman Islands, Cyprus, and Zurich. Every single account has been frozen. Every dummy corporation has been dismantled. Your board members are currently being detained for questioning regarding systemic pension embezzlement and international wire fraud.'
Victoria’s breath hitched. She reached out, gripping the edge of the glass desk so tightly her knuckles turned completely translucent. 'You... you audited offshore accounts? Without sovereign clearance? That violates international banking law!'
'Northstar Forensic Risk operates under direct federal counter-fraud mandates,' Marcus chimed in smoothly, stepping forward and placing a second thick portfolio onto the desk. 'And when you use those offshore accounts to embezzle forty-seven million dollars from municipal retirement funds to finance illegal real estate acquisitions—including the St. Jude Estate—sovereign immunity flies right out the seventy-floor window.'
Victoria glared at Marcus with pure, unadulterated hatred, before snapping her fierce gaze back to me. 'You think you're so smart, don't you? You think by tearing down my company you’ve won. But you don't know the half of it. The people behind Vanguard—the real power brokers who fund this syndicate—won't let this go. They will crush you, your mother, and your little forensic firm into powder before the week is out.'
'Let them try,' I replied, my voice steady and unyielding. 'I’ve spent my entire professional life hunting monsters who hide behind expensive suits and corporate letterheads. You thought my mother was weak. You thought you could throw her out into a blizzard and steal her legacy without a second thought. That mistake is what brought me to your door, Victoria.'
Special Agent Miller stepped into the room, flanked by two armed federal marshals. He stopped beside me, holding a pair of heavy steel handcuffs. 'Victoria Vance-Sinclair, you are under arrest for federal racketeering, wire fraud, international money laundering, and conspiracy to commit elder abuse. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.'
Victoria stood tall, her chin held high in a pathetic display of defiant pride. She refused to look down at the handcuffs as Agent Miller firmly grasped her wrists and snapped them shut with a crisp, echoing metallic click. As she was escorted past me toward the private elevator, she turned her head slightly, whispering a venomous threat through clenched teeth.
'This isn't over, Ephraim. The real masters are already moving their pieces.'
May you like
'Then I’ll be waiting for them,' I replied calmly.
As the elevator doors closed, sealing her fate, I walked over to the panoramic window and looked down at the sprawling, rain-soaked expanse of Manhattan. The glass palace had finally crumbled. But deep inside my chest, a cold, persistent instinct whispered that Victoria was right about one thing: the shadowy cabal funding her operations was still out there, and they were about to make their next move.
