Chapter 11 - The Phantom Benefactor

The collapse of Vanguard Global Interests sent shockwaves rippling across Wall Street and international financial markets. Within twenty-four hours of Victoria Vance-Sinclair’s arrest, major news networks were broadcasting continuous coverage of the federal raids on her Manhattan penthouse and offshore accounts. But while the public and the media celebrated the dismantling of a massive corporate fraud syndicate, I knew our victory was incomplete.
Back at the St. Jude Estate, sitting in the warm, secure confines of the library, I poured over the encrypted hard drives seized from Victoria’s private server. Marcus stood beside my desk, projecting decrypted financial logs onto the wall. 'Ephraim, we’ve traced the origin of the initial seed capital that launched Vanguard twenty years ago. It didn't come from venture capital or traditional banking syndicates.'
I looked up from my monitor, my eyes narrowing. 'Where did it come from?'
'A legacy trust fund managed by an anonymous shell entity called *Blackwood Heritage Group*,' Marcus replied, tapping his tablet to pull up a heavily encrypted corporate registry file. 'The entity is registered in a tax haven with near-impenetrable privacy laws. But we managed to crack the secondary firewall using the decryption keys recovered from Victoria’s personal vault.'
The holographic projection on the wall shifted, displaying a name that sent a sudden, chilling shockwave through my nervous system. The primary beneficiary and controlling trustee of Blackwood Heritage Group wasn't a corporation or a foreign government. It was an individual—a man named Harrison Cole.
My mother, who had been sitting quietly by the fireplace knitting a blanket, dropped her yarn ball. It rolled across the Persian rug, coming to a stop against the leg of my desk. She stood up slowly, her face turning pale as marble, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and long-buried grief.
'Harrison Cole...' my mother whispered, her voice trembling violently. 'That’s impossible. He died thirty years ago.'
I stood up immediately, walking over to her and taking her cold hands in mine. 'Mom, who is Harrison Cole?'
She looked up at me, tears glistening in her eyes for the first time since the night of the blizzard. 'He wasn't just a business partner of your grandfather, Ephraim. He was the man who supposedly embezzled our family’s original shipping fortune, bankrupted our estate, and disappeared into the night right before your father was forced to abandon us. Everyone in this town believed he died in a plane crash over the Atlantic back in the nineties.'
I turned back to the glowing screen, my jaw clenching so hard my teeth ached. 'He didn't die in a plane crash. He faked his death, washed his money through international syndicates, and spent the last three decades building a shadow empire using our family’s stolen legacy as his foundational capital. Victoria Vance-Sinclair wasn't the master puppeteer. She was just his regional lieutenant.'
Marcus stared at the decrypted records in stunned silence. 'If Harrison Cole is still alive, and he controls Blackwood Heritage Group, then he’s the one pulling the strings behind the entire network—from Ray and Daniel’s plot to Victoria’s corporate takeovers.'
My phone vibrated sharply against the desk. It wasn't an encrypted corporate alert this time. It was a standard, high-priority cellular call from an unknown, restricted phone number.
I picked up the receiver and pressed it to my ear, my voice cold and steady. 'Speak.'
A low, raspy, elderly chuckle echoed through the line—a sound dripping with decades of malice, luxury, and absolute cold-blooded calculation.
'Impressive work, my dear Ephraim,' a gravelly voice murmured across the connection. 'You hunted down the pawns, dismantled the regional lieutenants, and even exposed my corporate front in Manhattan. Your grandfather would have been so proud of your predatory instincts. Too bad you’re about to run out of time.'
'Harrison Cole,' I stated flatly, gripping the phone so hard my knuckles turned white. 'You’ve been hiding in the shadows for thirty years, thinking you were untouchable. Where are you?'
May you like
'Oh, I’m much closer than you think, my dear,' Cole whispered softly, a sinister edge creeping into his laugh. 'Look out your library window.'
Before I could even process the warning, a deafening explosion shattered the quiet night air, turning the front gates of the St. Jude Estate into a blazing wall of fire.
