Chapter 12 - Trial by Fire

The blast wave slammed against the heavy glass windows of the library with the force of a physical blow, rattling the antique bookshelves and sending a shower of fine dust cascading across the room. Outside, the majestic wrought-iron gates of the St. Jude Estate were engulfed in a violent, roiling wall of orange and black flames that lit up the snowy night like a midsummer wildfire.

'Get down, Mom! Stay away from the windows!' I shouted, lunging forward and physically shoving my mother behind the massive oak mahogany desk just as a second, smaller concussive pop echoed across the front lawn.

Marcus drew his concealed firearm from his shoulder holster in a fluid, practiced motion, dropping into a tactical crouch by the shattered edge of the window frame. He peered through the blinds into the burning courtyard. 'Ephraim, perimeter sensors are tripping all along the western fence line! We’ve got multiple hostile units approaching on foot under the cover of the smoke!'

'Professional mercenaries,' I muttered, my mind racing at lightspeed as I snapped my encrypted tactical tablet out of its charging dock. 'Cole didn't just call to gloat; he used the phone trace to triangulate our exact position and deliver a kinetic calling card.'

My mother peeked out from behind the heavy desk, her expression completely devoid of panic, replaced instead by the hard, unyielding steel of a woman who had survived too many wars to fold under fire. 'They want the estate, Ephraim. They want to burn down everything we fought to reclaim.'

'They won't get an inch of it,' I replied coldly. I tapped my tablet twice, activating Northstar’s emergency domestic defense protocol. 'Marcus, route all security feed cameras to my screen. Deploy the automated perimeter deterrents and lock down the internal safe room.'

On the multi-monitor display, infrared cameras flickered to life, capturing four heavily armed men clad in black tactical gear creeping stealthily across the snow-covered lawn toward the front porch, assault rifles raised, night-vision visors glowing green in the dark.

They thought they were raiding a sleepy historic mansion inhabited by an elderly woman and her corporate-consultant daughter. They didn't know that my firm’s residential security architecture was built to withstand a full-scale paramilitary assault.

'Initiating defensive grid in three... two... one,' I murmured, pressing the biometric authorization key on my screen.

Instantly, heavy steel blast shutters dropped down over every exterior window and door with a series of thunderous, mechanical thuds, plunging the mansion into secure twilight illuminated only by emergency red LED guide strips. Outside, high-pressure anti-riot water cannons mounted along the roofline hissed to life, unleashing freezing torrents of sub-zero water mixed with high-viscosity tactical foam directly onto the advancing mercenaries.

The mercenaries shouted in sudden panic as the freezing, blinding foam drenched their tactical gear, instantly freezing to their clothing in the sub-zero night air. Two of them slipped and crashed hard onto the icy pavement, while the remaining two scrambled backward toward the burning gates.

'Marcus, cover the rear exit. They’re going to try and flank through the conservatory,' I ordered, pulling a compact, high-caliber tactical pistol from my concealed desk holster.

'Got it,' Marcus muttered, bolting down the dimly lit hallway toward the back of the manor.

I turned to my mother, placing my hand firmly on her shoulder. 'Stay right here in the reinforced panic core. I’m going to end this.'

'Be careful, my girl,' she whispered, squeezing my hand with surprising strength. 'Don't just beat them. Break them.'

I checked the magazine of my weapon, racked the slide with a sharp, metallic click, and stepped out into the shadowed hallway, ready to hunt down the men who thought they could burn our legacy to the ground.
