Chapter 18 - The Geneva Invitation

The transatlantic flight to Geneva cut through the upper stratosphere like a silver arrow, banking smoothly over the snow-dusted peaks of the Swiss Alps before touching down on the private executive tarmac of Geneva International Airport. The crisp, alpine air carried the scent of pine and old money, contrasting sharply with the humid warmth of our summer in Silver Creek.

I stepped out of the Gulfstream into the private hangar, flanked by Marcus and two elite tactical security operatives outfitted in subtle, tailored suits that concealed heavy tactical plating. Waiting by the tarmac was a sleek, black Maybach with darkened windows, holding an impassive local driver wearing a crisp white-collar uniform.

'Ms. Sterling, I presume?' the driver asked in clipped, perfect English, stepping forward and holding open the rear door.

'Lead the way,' I replied smoothly, sliding into the luxurious leather interior without a moment's hesitation.

The Maybach glided silently through the picturesque streets of Geneva, leaving the bustling city center behind and winding its way up into the lush, wooded hills overlooking the breathtaking expanse of Lake Geneva. We eventually pulled through a set of massive, wrought-iron security gates half-hidden by thick pine forests, stopping before a sprawling, ultra-modern glass-and-stone villa perched dramatically on the cliffside.

This was the inner sanctum of The Geneva Circle—a clandestine board of global elites who manipulated international markets, sovereign debt structures, and multi-billion-dollar corporate takeovers from behind closed doors.

As we stepped out of the vehicle, heavy glass doors slid open automatically. We were greeted by a tall, impeccably dressed man in his late fifties with silver-streaked hair, piercing gray eyes, and an expression of cold, aristocratic hospitality.

'Welcome to Geneva, Ms. Sterling,' the man said, his voice smooth as silk with a faint, untraceable European accent. 'I am Director Vance—no relation to your former stepfather, I assure you. Please, follow me.'

He led us through a cavernous, minimalist art gallery filled with priceless modern masterpieces into a magnificent glass-walled conference room overlooking the sparkling blue waters of the lake far below. Seated around a long, polished obsidian table were six individuals—wealthy financiers, former intelligence directors, and tech conglomerate CEOs who collectively controlled trillions of dollars in global capital.

I walked straight to the center of the room, refusing to sit down, standing tall with my arms resting lightly on the back of a leather chair. Marcus and my security detail stationed themselves quietly by the glass doors.

'You invited me here to discuss restitution,' I began, cutting straight through the polite pleasantries with razor-sharp precision. 'Let’s skip the diplomatic theater. State your terms.'

Director Vance smiled thinly, stepping to the head of the table and resting his palms on the obsidian surface. 'You are every bit as direct as our dossier suggested, Ms. Sterling. You have dismantled several of our regional portfolios in North America—Ray Vance, Jonathan Sterling, Victoria, and Harrison Cole. They were ambitious, but sloppy. They drew unnecessary attention to our operations.'

'So you called me here to offer me a pink slip?' I asked, raising an eyebrow.

'On the contrary,' Director Vance replied smoothly, spreading his hands. 'We want to offer you a partnership. Northstar Forensic Risk possesses an uncanny algorithmic ability to uncover systemic fraud. We want you to manage our internal compliance oversight across North America and Europe. Name your salary, your equity stake, and your jurisdictional boundaries. You will be untouchable.'

The silence in the room was absolute. Every eye was locked onto me, waiting to see how the young woman who had torn down their regional syndicates would react to an invitation to join the global elite.

I let out a low, cold laugh that echoed sharply off the glass walls. I looked each member of The Geneva Circle dead in the eye, letting a fierce, predatory smile spread across my face.

'You think because you offer me a seat at your golden table that I’ll forget what you’ve done to thousands of innocent families across the world?' I asked, my voice dropping to an icy, lethal whisper. 'You build your multi-trillion-dollar empires on the bones of the vulnerable, hiding behind fancy titles and offshore accounts just like Cole and Victoria did.'

Director Vance’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, hardened glare. 'You would be wise not to romanticize your position, Ms. Sterling. Refusing our offer carries a very heavy price.'

May you like

'My price is already paid,' I replied, turning on my heel. 'Consider this my formal counter-offer: I didn't come to Geneva to join your syndicate. I came here to deliver your notice of termination.'

Without waiting for a response, I signaled to Marcus and walked out of the glass conference room, leaving the most powerful shadow syndicate on earth staring after me in stunned, furious silence.
