Chapter 12 - A Mother's Vengeance

The formal divorce petition was filed in Baltimore County Circuit Court on Tuesday morning. Because of the airtight forensic evidence compiled by our auditors and the ironclad inheritance clause discovered by Victoria Vance, the initial emergency hearing was granted on an expedited basis.
Tyler was required to appear via video link from a county holding facility where he had been detained briefly following an altercation outside a local diner where he had attempted to harass one of Cassandra’s former business associates for cash.
When the video feed flickered onto the courtroom monitors, Tyler looked unrecognizable. The sleek, impeccably groomed corporate executive who had graced boardroom tables and private jet cabins was gone. In his place sat a hollowed-out man wearing a standard orange jumpsuit, his hair uncombed, his eyes darting nervously around the sterile holding room.
I sat in the gallery beside my father, my posture composed and unwavering. I wore a crisp white blouse and a black wool blazer, my wedding ring permanently gone from my finger, replaced by a simple gold band my mother had worn during her own battles in the business world.
Judge Holloway, a stern jurist with decades of experience in commercial and family law, adjusted his glasses and looked down at the digital files before him.
“Mr. Vance, you are appearing before this court on emergency motions for marital asset forfeiture, corporate fraud restitution, and permanent restraining orders filed by Mrs. Elena Hartwell,” Judge Holloway said, his voice echoing through the quiet courtroom. “Do you have legal representation present?”
Tyler swallowed hard, leaning close to the camera in the holding facility. “Your Honor, my previous attorneys dropped me, and I haven't had adequate time to secure independent counsel—!”
“Mr. Vance,” Judge Holloway interrupted coldly. “The court records indicate you were served with comprehensive notice seventy-two hours ago. Furthermore, the forensic audits provided by Hartwell Medical Logistics demonstrate an unbroken, documented trail of systemic embezzlement totaling over six hundred thousand dollars in corporate diversion.”
“It was a misunderstanding! Elena authorized—!” Tyler started to shout, his voice cracking with desperation.
“Silence, Mr. Vance,” Judge Holloway commanded, banging his gavel once with sharp finality. “This court has reviewed the original 1994 shareholder incorporation agreement, including the Marital Asset Protection and Non-Dilution Clause. The court finds clear, convincing, and overwhelming evidence of financial malfeasance, breach of fiduciary duty, and marital betrayal.”
Tyler froze on the screen, his mouth half-open, as the judge delivered the verdict.

“The court hereby grants the petition for immediate dissolution of marriage, permanent injunctive relief against Mr. Vance, total forfeiture of all disputed marital assets under the non-dilution clause, and an order for full restitution of embezzled funds. Mr. Vance leaves this marriage with zero equity, zero spousal support, and a pending federal grand jury subpoena for white-collar fraud.”
Tyler slumped forward against the metal table in the holding room, his shoulders shaking as the reality of his total, absolute ruin finally settled over him.
