Tyler and Elena / Chapter 3 / 20

Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

On the third day following the birth, while Tyler was still posting photos of himself and Cassandra yachting on the Chesapeake, my father convened an emergency executive session on the fourteenth floor of Hartwell Tower.

I insisted on attending, despite Dr. Vance’s strict orders to rest. I wore a tailored midnight-blue pantsuit that concealed the surgical binder around my waist, my hair pulled back into a severe chignon that left no room for sympathy or softness. When the double doors of the boardroom swung open, the murmurs among the vice presidents died instantly.

Marcus Thorne, the senior vice president of operations and Tyler’s primary ally within the executive ranks, stood up from his leather chair with a forced, oily smile.

“Elena! We were terribly sorry to hear about the complications with the delivery,” Marcus began, smoothing his silk tie. “Though it is highly irregular to summon an emergency quorum on a Saturday, especially when Tyler is currently out of state finalizing our mid-Atlantic logistics expansion—”

“Sit down, Marcus,” I interrupted, my voice cutting through the spacious room like a scalpel.

I walked to the head of the mahogany table, my heels clicking sharply against the polished hardwood floor. I didn’t sit; I leaned both hands against the edge of the table, looking down at the dozen men and women who had watched Tyler slowly consolidate power over the past two years.

“Tyler is not finalizing an expansion,” I said clearly. “Tyler is currently on a recreational junket in Virginia, utilizing Hartwell corporate assets, company-issued credit lines, and misappropriated logistics funds to celebrate the birthday of Cassandra Vale.”

A murmur rippled through the directors. Marcus scoffed, crossing his arms. “That is a gross exaggeration of corporate perks, Elena. As COO, Tyler has discretionary spending authority for client relations and strategic networking—”

“Display exhibit A on the main monitors,” I commanded without breaking eye contact with Marcus.

The massive wall-mounted screen flickered to life. Projected in high definition were the itemized credit card statements, the private jet flight manifests listing Cassandra Vale as an 'executive consultant,' and screenshots of Cassandra’s public social media posts featuring the Hartwell corporate jet in the background.

“Eighty-four thousand dollars in four days,” I said, my voice dropping an octave, carrying an icy stillness that commanded absolute silence. “Boutique jewelry, luxury yacht charters, and five-star resort accommodations. None of these fall under strategic networking, Marcus. Unless, of course, Ms. Vale’s event planning business is now a core asset of Hartwell Medical Logistics.”

Marcus swallowed hard, his face flushing red. “Tyler is... he’s young, he has unorthodox leadership methods, but to call an emergency audit over personal indiscretions—”

“It’s not an indiscretion,” my father interjected, sliding a legal document across the table toward the corporate counsel. “It’s grand larceny and breach of fiduciary duty. Effective immediately, Tyler Vance’s executive credentials, security clearances, corporate email access, and company-issued credit accounts have been permanently revoked.”

“You can’t do that without a full shareholder vote!” Marcus protested, slamming his hand on the table. “Tyler holds significant administrative influence—!”

“I hold sixty-two percent of the voting shares,” I reminded him, my gaze locking onto Marcus with lethal precision. “My mother established this company with her own hands, and I will burn it to the ground before I let a parasite and his mistress pick the bones clean. Now, Marcus, you have two choices: you can either hand over your own records regarding Tyler’s unauthorized asset transfers, or you can join him on the unemployment line by noon. What’ll it be?”

The silence in the boardroom was absolute. Marcus slowly unclasped his hands, sat back down, and lowered his gaze.
