Chapter 2 - The Secret Inheritance

The words rang in my ears like a physical blow. Forty billion dollars. Vanguard Estate. Murdered parents. It sounded like a cheap Hollywood script, the kind of movie Ethan and I would watch on our broken television while eating stale popcorn. I looked down at the photograph again, my fingers tracing the faded edges. The baby in the woman's arms had a tiny birthmark shaped like a crescent moon on her left wrist. I instinctively pulled back my uniform sleeve. There it was. The exact same mark.

"This can't be real," I breathed, shaking my head violently. "My parents died in a car crash when I was ten. They were ordinary people. We lived in a tiny apartment. We struggled every single month!"

"Because they were hiding you to keep you alive, Claire," Harrison explained, stepping closer so only I could hear him. "Your biological father was Arthur Vanguard. He was my mentor, the man who funded my very first tech startup. Twenty years ago, his empire was stolen from him by his own brother, Silas Vanguard. Arthur and his wife fled with their newborn daughter. They changed their names, moved to rural Ohio, and lived off the grid. Silas has spent two decades poisoning the media, claiming Arthur embezzled funds and ran away. But the truth is far more sinister."

"Silas killed them," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a wave of ice water.

"The car crash that killed your parents wasn't an accident," Harrison said grimly. "Silas tracked them down. But he didn't know they had a second child—your brother Ethan. And he didn't realize you had survived the crash and been placed into the foster system under the radar. Until now."

"Claire? What's going on?"

I turned around to see Lou walking out from behind the counter, holding a heavy frying pan like a weapon. "Are these city guys bothering you? Because I can call the sheriff right now."

"No, Lou, it's fine," I said quickly, trying to stabilize my shaky breath.

Harrison looked at Lou, then back at me. "We don't have time for a discussion here, Claire. My security team intercepted an encrypted transmission ten minutes ago. Silas Vanguard's private security firm just flagged your medical records from St. Jude. They know your DNA matches Arthur's. They are moving on your position as we speak. We need to get your brother and leave. Now."

"Ethan," I gasped. The realization hit me like a lightning bolt. If these people were dangerous, Ethan was completely defenseless at home. "He's at our house. He has a heart condition, he can't handle stress—"

"My men are already securing his perimeter," Harrison said, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder. His touch was warm and grounded, sending a strange jolt of electricity through me. "But we need to physically move him to a secure location. Trust me, Claire. You saved my life. I will protect yours."

I looked at the documents, then at the man who held the keys to a world I couldn't even comprehend. I didn't know him, but looking into his eyes, I saw an unyielding determination. He wasn't lying.

"Lou, I have to go," I said, untying my apron and throwing it on the counter.

"Claire, you can't just walk out in the middle of a shift!" Lou yelled.

"Keep the tips, Lou. Keep everything," I said, following Harrison as he turned toward the door.

As we stepped out into the pouring rain, the six black SUVs opened their doors. Harrison guided me into the back seat of the lead vehicle. The interior was luxurious, lined with leather and glowing digital screens. As the heavy door shut, sealing out the sound of the storm, Harrison picked up a satellite phone.

"Team Alpha, what's the status on the brother?" he demanded.

A static-filled voice crackled back. "Sir, we have a visual on the residence. But we have a problem. Two unmarked black sedans just pulled up to the driveway. Armed men are exiting the vehicles. We are engaging."

My heart stopped. "Ethan!" I screamed, lunging toward the front seat.

Harrison grabbed my arm, holding me firmly but gently. "Drive!" he ordered the chauffeur. "Fast!"
