Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Glass Tower

The Vanguard Gala was held at the top of the Vanguard Tower, a glittering ninety-story monolith of black glass and steel in the heart of Manhattan. The grand ballroom was filled with hundreds of people in tuxedos and diamond-encrusted gowns. Jazz music floated through the air, accompanied by the clinking of champagne flutes and the low murmur of old money conversations.

I stood in front of a full-length mirror in a private holding room on the penthouse floor. I barely recognized myself. I was wearing an emerald-green silk gown that perfectly matched my eyes, a subtle nod to my biological mother. My dark hair was swept up in an elegant twist, and a simple, priceless diamond necklace rested against my collarbone.

Harrison walked up behind me, looking devastatingly handsome in a tailored black tuxedo. He looked at my reflection, his expression softening for a brief moment. "Arthur would be proud of you, Claire. You look exactly like your mother."

"I feel like a target," I admitted, my stomach turning in knots.

"You are a target," Harrison said honestly, turning me around to face him. He reached out and adjusted the strap of my gown, his fingers lingering on my shoulder for a second. "But you're a target with an army behind you. My security team has completely locked down this floor. The moment we walk through those double doors, everything changes. No turning back."

"Let's go," I said, drawing a deep breath.

We left the room and walked down the long, marble corridor toward the ballroom entrance. Two heavy mahogany doors stood guarded by security personnel. As we approached, the guards recognized Harrison and opened the doors.

The sudden wall of sound and light was overwhelming. Flashes from cameras erupted as Harrison Cole's arrival was noticed. Journalists and billionaires alike turned to see who the tech tycoon was escorting.

At the far end of the room, standing on a raised stage in front of a giant digital screen displaying the Vanguard logo, was a man in his late late fifties. He had sharp, hawkish features, silver hair slicked back, and a smile that looked like it had been carved out of marble. Silas Vanguard.

Silas was in the middle of a speech. "...and as we look to the next decade of innovation, Vanguard will solidify its position as the global leader in medical tech—"

"I believe there is an urgent matter that needs to be addressed before any future plans are discussed, Silas," Harrison's voice boomed through the ballroom, amplified by the high-tech acoustics.

The room fell completely silent. The jazz music stopped.

Silas narrowed his eyes, his fake smile freezing on his face as he looked across the crowd at Harrison. "Harrison. This is a private shareholder meeting. You may hold a significant stake, but you cannot disrupt my keynote address."

"I'm not disrupting it alone," Harrison said, stepping aside and gesturing to me. "I am introducing a primary shareholder. A woman who holds fifty-one percent of the voting power of this company under the Arthur Vanguard Legacy Trust."

Whispers erupted like wildfire through the crowd. Silas's face turned from marble white to a dark, furious red.

"What is the meaning of this prank?" Silas sneered, stepping down from the stage. "Arthur Vanguard has been dead for two decades. He had no heirs."

"He had a daughter, Silas," I said, stepping forward, my voice clear and steady, echoing through the massive room. I felt a surge of courage I didn't know I possessed. "My name is Claire Vanguard Parker. And I've come to take back what you stole from my father."
