Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Gamble

The smoke from the flashbang swirled around us as Harrison's guards immediately returned fire, creating a wall of defensive suppression. Harrison pulled me down behind a heavy concrete pillar. Bullets chipped away at the edges of the stone, spraying dust and debris into my hair.

"We're pinned down!" one of Harrison's men shouted over the deafening roar of gunfire. "We can't hold them off for long; they have the numbers!"

I looked at the vault door, then at Harrison. The man who had everything—wealth, power, influence—was putting his life on the line for me, a girl who had been flipping burgers twenty-four hours ago.

"Harrison, there has to be another way into that vault," I cried, the sound of gunfire making my ears ring. "My father built this system. He wouldn't build a vault that could completely lock out his own children if an emergency happened!"

Harrison's eyes widened slightly. "Arthur was a genius of redundancy. He always built a failsafe into his software architectures. He called it the 'Genesis Protocol'. It was a hardcoded biometric sequence that overrode any secondary authorization, but it required a specific physical sequence."

"What sequence?" I asked desperately, checking the time on my phone. Thirty minutes left for Ethan.

"It was based on his family's vitals," Harrison remembered, his brow furrowing as he tried to recall details from twenty years ago. "He told me once that if the system ever turned against his family, the blood would unlock the door. Claire, the scanner doesn't just read your palm prints—it reads your blood composition!"

I didn't hesitate. I looked around the floor and found a sharp, broken piece of glass from a shattered light fixture near the pillar.

"Claire, what are you doing?" Harrison shouted as he fired a shot around the corner to keep Silas's men back.

I took the glass and sliced it deep across my left palm, right over the crescent moon birthmark. Blood, bright and crimson, welled up instantly, filling my hand.

"The blood line," I whispered.

I broke cover, sprinting out into the open corridor toward the vault door.

"Claire, get back!" Harrison roared, lunging forward to cover me as bullets whizzed through the air, one tearing through the sleeve of his tuxedo.

I reached the scanner. I slammed my bleeding palm directly against the glass interface, smearing the thick, dark AB-negative blood across the electronic sensor.

The system went dead silent for a terrifying three seconds. The red light on the panel turned to an intense, pulsating crimson.

A mechanical, digitized voice echoed throughout the bunker: *GENESIS PROTOCOL ACTIVATED. WELCOME HOME, CLAIRE VANGUARD. OVERRIDING ALL SECONDARY COMPLIANCE.*

The massive steel deadbolts inside the door began to turn with a deep, thunderous boom. The vault door slowly swung open, revealing a sterile, high-tech clean room filled with glowing medical canisters.

"Stop her!" Silas screamed from the end of the hallway, realizing his absolute control was slipping away. He pushed past his own guards, pulling a chrome revolver from his coat, his face twisted in a maniacal, murderous rage. He pointed the gun directly at my back as I stepped into the vault.

"Claire, drop!" Harrison yelled.

Before Silas could pull the trigger, Harrison threw his own body into Silas, tackling the older man into the concrete floor. The revolver fired wildly, the bullet shattering a glass partition nearby. The two men wrestled on the floor, a brutal, desperate fight for survival.

I didn't stop. I ran into the vault, my eyes scanning the glowing containers until I found the one marked: *PROJECT PHOENIX: BIO-SYNTHETIC VALVE - ASSET 01 (MATCH: VANGUARD, E.).*

I grabbed the temperature-controlled case. It was heavy, metallic, and cold. I turned around just in time to see Harrison deliver a devastating punch to Silas's jaw, knocking the dictator unconscious.

Harrison stood up, panting, his shirt torn and covered in dust, but his eyes were bright with triumph. "We got it. Let's save your brother."
