Chapter 9 - The Truth Unveiled

The emergency medical bay at the Vanguard private clinic was a hive of activity. The moment Harrison and I burst through the doors with the bio-synthetic valve, a team of world-class thoracic surgeons seized the container and rushed into the operating theater. Ethan was already prepped, his chest opened, his life hanging by a literal thread of medical technology.
I stood at the observation window, my hand wrapped in a clean white bandage, watching the surgeons work with mechanical precision. Harrison stood right behind me, his hands resting on my shoulders. His presence was the only thing keeping me grounded as the minutes ticked by like hours.
"He's going to make it, Claire," Harrison murmured softly near my ear. "The surgeons say the valve is a perfect genetic fit. His body isn't rejecting it. The cellular reconstruction has begun."
Two hours later, the lead surgeon walked out of the theater, pulling off his mask. He looked exhausted but smiled warmly at me. "Miss Vanguard, it's a miracle. The valve integrated perfectly. Your brother's heart function is returning to normal parameters. He's going to make a full, complete recovery."
A massive sob of relief escaped my throat, and before I could think about the boundaries between a waitress and a billionaire, I turned around and threw my arms around Harrison's neck. I buried my face in his shoulder, crying tears of pure joy.
Harrison froze for a fraction of a second, then his arms wrapped tightly around my waist, lifting me slightly off the ground. He held me close, his grip strong and protective. "I told you I'd protect you, Claire," he whispered into my hair.
When I finally pulled back, my cheeks flushed, Harrison's expression became serious again. "The battle isn't entirely over. Silas's lawyers are currently trying to destroy all documentation at the main headquarters. The FBI is hesitant to move without a direct directive from the Vanguard board."
"Then let's give them one," I said, wiping my tears away. "I am the majority shareholder now. Let's end this permanently."
We returned to the Vanguard Tower, accompanied by a massive convoy of federal agents and Harrison's security. The news of the shootout and the DNA match had already leaked to the press; the streets outside the tower were blocked by thousands of protesters, reporters, and news vans.
We entered the executive penthouse boardroom. Silas Vanguard was sitting there, handcuffed to a chair, surrounded by federal agents and his pale, terrified lawyers.
"You think you've won, Claire?" Silas spat, looking up at me with venomous eyes. "You're a child. You know nothing of running a global empire. The board will never support a waitress from Ohio."
"The board doesn't have a choice, Silas," I said, walking to the head of the massive mahogany table and sitting in the center executive chair—the chair that once belonged to my father. Harrison stood firmly at my right hand.

I looked at the remaining board members who had gathered, their faces filled with fear and awe.
"As of this moment," I announced, my voice carrying a cold, undeniable authority, "Silas Vanguard is terminated from all positions within Vanguard Corporation. Marcus Vance is removed from the board and will face charges of attempted murder alongside Silas. We are cooperating fully with the federal investigation into the deaths of Arthur and Eleanor Vanguard."
I looked directly into Silas's eyes. "You took everything from my parents. You tried to take my brother's life. But you failed. Take him away."

The federal agents grabbed Silas, dragging him out of the room as he screamed curses at me. The boardroom doors slammed shut behind him, leaving an eerie, profound silence.
The remaining board members slowly stood up, one by one, bowing their heads respectfully to me. The empire was finally reclaimed.
