Chapter 6 - Whispers and Betrayals

The ballroom exploded into pure chaos. Reporters pressed forward, their cameras flashing violently. Silas's legal team immediately rushed the stage, forming a defensive wall around the CEO.

"This is an absurd fabrication!" Silas shouted over the noise, his eyes locked onto me with a lethal intensity. "This woman is an actress, an imposter hired by Harrison Cole to launch a hostile corporate takeover! Security, remove these trespassers immediately!"

"Not so fast, Silas," Harrison said, pulling a digital tablet from his jacket and connecting it to the ballroom's main projection system. Suddenly, the giant screen behind the stage changed. It displayed a certified, legally binding DNA profile from an independent federal forensics lab, alongside my biological birth certificate and a timeline of the Arthur Vanguard Trust.

"The DNA is an exact match to Arthur Vanguard," Harrison announced to the entire room. "The legal framework is absolute. The moment Arthur's direct heir is verified, the current CEO's operational powers are suspended. The board has no choice but to call an immediate emergency vote."

The members of the Vanguard board of directors, sitting in the front rows, began talking frantically among themselves. A senior board member, an elderly man named Marcus Vance, stood up. "Silas, if this documentation is authentic, we must halt the restructuring immediately. The law is clear."

Silas looked like a cornered animal. He glared at Harrison, then at me. "You think you've won, Harrison? You think you can use this girl to destroy me?" He turned to his head of security, a ruthless-looking man with a scarred face. "Get the legal injunction. Clear the room!"

Within minutes, Harrison's security team and Silas's guards formed a tense standoff. Harrison guided me back out of the main ballroom into a private executive conference room adjacent to the penthouse. Marcus Vance and two other neutral board members followed us.

"Claire, if you truly are Arthur's daughter, this changes everything," Marcus said, his hands shaking as he reviewed the physical documents Harrison handed him. "But you must understand the danger you are in. Silas will not go quietly. He has resources you can't imagine."

"I don't care about the money, Mr. Vance," I said fiercely. "My brother Ethan is dying in a medical transport downstairs. Silas has the bio-synthetic heart valve that can save his life locked in the vault on the lower levels of this very building. I need that valve. Now."

Marcus looked sympathetic. "The lower-level vaults require dual authentication. One from the CEO... and one from the primary heir's biometric data."

"We have Claire's biometrics right here," Harrison said, gesturing to a portable scanner his team had brought. "We can override Silas's lock if the board authorizes an emergency medical release."

"I can grant that authorization," Marcus said, pulling out his security keycard. "Let's go down to the vault before Silas's lawyers block us."

We hurried toward the private executive elevator. Harrison, Marcus, myself, and two of Harrison's top security guards stepped inside. The elevator began its rapid descent to the subterranean levels.

As the digital floor counter ticked down—30, 20, 10, B1, B2—the lights inside the elevator suddenly flickered and died. The elevator came to a grinding, violent halt between floors.

"What's happening?" I gasped, grabbing Harrison's arm in the pitch black.

"The backup power should kick in," Harrison muttered, pulling out his tactical flashlight. The beam illuminated the small space.

Suddenly, Marcus Vance reached into his tuxedo jacket. But he didn't pull out a keycard. He pulled out a compact silencer-equipped pistol, pointing it directly at Harrison's chest.

"I'm sorry, Harrison," Marcus said, his voice entirely devoid of his previous warmth. "But Silas pays much better than a dead mentor's memory. The board belongs to him. And both of you are going to die in this shaft."
