Chapter 19 - Closing the Circle

The digital audio recorder hummed softly in the quiet darkness of Daniel's home office as the microcassette played back its chilling contents. The voices were unmistakable: U.S. Attorney Arthur Pendelton and Lorraine Cole, discussing the smooth acquisition of industrial properties, the laundering of illicit funds through shell corporations, and the deliberate shelving of federal indictments in exchange for massive political campaign contributions.

Daniel sat back in his leather desk chair, rubbing his temples as a massive headache pounded behind his eyes. The corruption went all the way to the top. If he handed this tape over to local precinct dispatch or standard federal channels, it would likely land on Pendelton's own desk—or be intercepted by someone on the prosecutor's payroll before the sun rose.

He needed a direct channel. Someone outside the state jurisdiction who couldn't be bought off by local political machines.

He reached for his secure department-issued burner phone—a backup device reserved for confidential informants—and dialed a direct-line contact at the Federal Bureau of Investigation's internal affairs division in Washington, D.C. It rang twice before a crisp, professional voice answered.

"Special Agent Vance speaking... state your badge number and department."

"This is Sergeant Daniel Mercer, Badge 408, Metro Nashville Police Department," Daniel said, his voice steady, cold, and absolute. "I have recorded audio evidence and transactional ledgers proving active federal racketeering and judicial bribery involving U.S. Attorney Arthur Pendelton. I need an independent federal marshal escort out of state immediately."

A heavy silence hung over the secure line for three long seconds before the agent replied. *‘Sergeant Mercer... do you realize the gravity of what you’re alleging?’*

"I have the evidence sitting on my desk right now, Agent," Daniel replied grimly. "And if you don't dispatch a secure transport team to my location within the hour, this evidence goes public on every news wire service in the country."

*‘Stay put, Sergeant,’* the voice from D.C. commanded sharply. *‘Federal Marshals are thirty minutes out. Lock your doors and trust no one.’*
