Chapter 4 - Secrets in the Safe Deposit Box

The morning sun broke over the skyline of downtown Nashville, casting long, sharp shadows across the concrete canyons. Daniel sat across from bank manager Arthur Pendelton in a quiet, wood-paneled conference room inside the First National Trust building. On the mahogany table between them sat a heavy steel security box that had belonged to Lorraine Cole.

"Sergeant Mercer, I understand your urgency, and given the active police investigation, our legal department has authorized opening this box under court order," Pendelton said, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses nervously. "However, I must warn you—Mrs. Cole was a client with us for over fifteen years. Her financial dealings were... complex."

"Complex is a polite word for fraudulent, Mr. Pendelton," Daniel replied evenly, keeping his voice strictly professional despite the caffeine-fueled exhaustion gnawing at his nerves. "Open the box."

The manager turned the two brass keys simultaneously, the lock giving a heavy, satisfying click. He lifted the steel lid. Inside lay a neat stack of documents, a flash drive labeled *‘Insurance-2025’*, and a thick velvet jewelry pouch.

Daniel put on his gloves and carefully sifted through the contents. The first document was a birth certificate—not Evan's, but a boy named Thomas Cole, born thirty-five years ago. Next to it was an adoption decree, followed by a certified copy of a life insurance policy worth two million dollars, naming Lorraine Cole as the sole primary beneficiary.

"Thomas Cole?" Daniel frowned, looking up at the bank manager. "Evan always told Claire he was an only child. Who the hell is Thomas Cole?"

Pendelton leaned in closer, squinting at the birth certificate. "Good heavens... I haven't heard that name in years. Thomas was Lorraine's older son. Rumor around the bank back in the nineties was that he got mixed up in some bad crowds, skipped town after a botched robbery, and was legally declared dead after a car went off a bridge in West Virginia. But his body was never recovered."

Daniel's cop instincts instantly flared. *Legally declared dead.* In the criminal underworld, a fake death certificate was the ultimate golden ticket for someone looking to vanish, launder money, or assume a completely new identity.

He picked up the flash drive and slipped it into an evidence bag. "What about the safety deposit box rental history? Who else had access?"

Pendelton flipped open a ledger binder. "Only Mrs. Cole... and one authorized deputy signer added six months ago."

"Name?" Daniel demanded.

"A gentleman named Arthur Vance... wait, no. Arthur Pendelton? No, excuse me, let me check the signature card." Pendelton's face drained of color as he read the name on the card. "It was signed by... Detective Marcus Vance."

The room seemed to spin on its axis. Daniel's hand froze inches above the table. "Marcus Vance? My lead detective?"

"Yes, Sergeant," the manager stammered, pointing at the signature line. "He presented department credentials and a power of attorney signed by Lorraine Cole herself."

Daniel stared at the signature card, the pieces of a terrifying puzzle clicking together with deafening clarity. Marcus wasn't just investigating the case. Marcus was protecting Lorraine. And Claire was sitting alone in her apartment across town, completely unprotected.
