Chapter 9 - Chaos on the Docks

The warehouse transformed into a warzone in seconds. Flash-bangs crackled like thunder, blinding white light bouncing off the concrete floors and rusted metal walls.
"Federal agents! Down on the ground! Do it now!" roared the lead tactical commander, his voice amplified by his helmet comms.
One of the armed thugs tried to swing his rifle toward the descending operators, but a non-lethal beanbag round struck him squarely in the chest, folding him over like a cheap accordion before he crashed hard onto the floor. The second thug dropped his weapon instantly, throwing his hands over his ears and dropping to his knees in the thick smoke.
Marcus Vance lunged desperately for the open briefcase on the workbench, his fingers clawing at the stack of cashier's checks and passports inside. "You're not taking my money!" he screamed, panic warping his features.
Before Marcus could grab the passport folder, Daniel lunged across the workbench, tackling his former partner with the full fury of twenty-seven years of pent-up betrayal. The two men crashed hard into a stack of empty plastic crates, sending them flying across the floor in a clattering cascade.
"You sold out your badge, Marcus! You sold out a kid you watched grow up!" Daniel roared, pinning Marcus's arm behind his back with a vicious knee pressed into his shoulder blade.
"Get off me, Dan! You ruined everything!" Marcus spat, thrashing blindly against the pavement.
Across the room, Lorraine Cole tried to slip away toward the side exit, her silver hair flying as she scurried like a trapped rat. But two female federal agents intercepted her before she reached the threshold, slamming her wrists into steel zip-cuffs with practiced efficiency.
"Let me go, you uncultured brute! Do you know who my family is? My lawyer will have your badge before sundown!" Lorraine shrieked, kicking her heels against the concrete.
Amidst the roaring commotion, Daniel ignored the wrestling match and sprinted toward the center of the room where Claire was still tied to the chair. The smoke was clearing slowly, revealing her terrified, tear-streaked face.

"Dad..." she whimpered as Daniel pulled a tactical knife from his belt and sliced quickly through the plastic zip-ties binding her wrists and ankles.
"I've got you, sweetheart. You're safe now. It's over," Daniel whispered fiercely, pulling his daughter into a crushing, protective embrace as paramedics rushed into the warehouse through the blown-out doors.
