Chapter 20 - The Open Road

The headlights of two unmarked federal black SUVs cut sharp beams through the heavy winter fog as they pulled silently up the gravel driveway of Daniel's home at 3:00 AM. Heavy boots crunched on the frozen ground, and two armed U.S. Marshals stepped out, checking their credentials before knocking firmly on the front door.

Inside, Daniel stood by the living room window, watching them arrive. Claire stood beside him, clutching her coat around her shoulders, her expression a mix of lingering fear and quiet resolve.

"Are you sure we have to leave, Dad?" she asked softly, looking up at him. "Just when things were starting to feel safe again?"

Daniel wrapped a protective arm around his daughter's shoulders, kissing the top of her head. "We're not running away, sweetheart. We're just making sure the people who tried to destroy our family answer for what they did—all of them, right up to the top. But until the federal sweep is complete across the state, we need to be somewhere safe."

The doorbell rang—three sharp, measured raps.

Daniel took a deep breath, checked the service weapon at his hip one last time, and walked down the hallway to unlock the heavy wooden door. The cold night air rushed in, carrying the scent of pine, rain, and distant promise.

He stepped out onto the porch, nodded to the federal marshals waiting in the mist, and looked back one last time down the long winding road leading away from his home. The road ahead was uncertain, fraught with hidden dangers and unfinished battles, but for the first time in months, Sergeant Daniel Mercer knew the badge on his chest still meant something.

He turned, closed the door behind him, and walked into the night.
