Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Warehouse

Daniel slowly stepped out from the shadows of the doorway, his hands raised palms forward at shoulder height, his eyes boring holes straight through Marcus Vance.

"You're a coward, Marcus," Daniel said steadily, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "Hiding behind dirty money and a desperate old woman. Is a payout from Lorraine really worth throwing your badge and your freedom into the trash?"

Marcus sneered, tucking his hands into his jacket pockets. "Freedom, Dan? In this country, freedom belongs to whoever has the highest net worth. You've spent thirty years playing by the book, and what do you have to show for it? A rented house, a police pension that barely covers groceries, and a daughter whose life is now collateral because you couldn't mind your own business."

Claire let out a muffled cry behind the duct tape, her eyes wide with terror as she thrashed against the ropes holding her to the chair.

Lorraine stepped forward, clicking her expensive heels against the concrete floor. She stopped two feet from Daniel, looking him up and down with utter contempt. "You've been a thorn in my side ever since my darling Evan married your naive little girl, Sergeant. You thought you could investigate my family? You thought you could dig into my real estate holdings?"

"You're running a massive mortgage and insurance fraud syndicate, Lorraine," Daniel replied, keeping his voice deadpan. "The federal task force has already frozen your accounts. You have nowhere left to run."

Lorraine's face twitched, a flash of genuine panic breaking through her icy facade. She spun around to face Marcus. "Is that true? Did the feds freeze the offshore accounts?"

"Don't listen to him, Lorraine, he's bluffing to rattle your nerves," Marcus lied smoothly, though a bead of sweat rolled down his temple. "We still have the leverage that matters." He gestured toward Claire with a flick of his chin. "As long as Claire's signature is transferred on these liquidation forms, the final property assets clear into our holding account by noon. Once that money moves, we vanish to the Caymans. And Daniel... well, Daniel becomes another tragic statistic of a dock shootout gone wrong."

The two armed thugs chambered rounds into their rifles simultaneously, the metallic *clack-clack* echoing ominous and final in the damp air.
