Chapter 11 - The Kidnapping at the Clinic Gates

While the warehouse was frozen in terror, a sudden, violent thud rocked the command van parked in the alleyway outside.
Before the two guards in the front seat could draw their weapons, the van’s side doors were violently ripped open by explosive breaching charges.
CS gas flooded the cabin, blinding me instantly.
I coughed violently, reaching blindly for my trauma bag, but rough hands grabbed my wrists, yanking me out into the pouring rain.
“Get the girl!” a harsh voice barked through a gas mask. “Julian had a backup squad stationed in the alley!”
I fought back with everything I had, kicking and thrashing, driving the heel of my boot into the knee of the first mercenary. He cursed, dropping back, but a second attacker slammed the butt of a rifle against the side of my head.
Pain exploded behind my eyes, and darkness rushed in from the edges of my vision.
When my consciousness returned, I was tied to a heavy steel support pillar inside the upper catwalks of the warehouse, overlooking the entire floor below.
A mercenary held a tactical knife against my throat, his breath smelling of stale tobacco.
Below us, the council elders were huddled against the walls, while Liam stood in the center of the floor, surrounded by Leo and twenty loyal Mercer enforcers who had stormed the perimeter.
Julian was backing toward the catwalk stairs, a bloody gunshot wound in his shoulder, his eyes wild with desperate, rabid madness.
“Liam!” Julian screamed from the base of the metal staircase.
Liam turned, his eyes tracking Julian’s gaze upward—straight to where I was tied to the pillar with a blade pressed against my skin.
The color completely drained from Liam’s face.
The cold, calculated warlord vanished, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated terror.
“Clara!” Liam yelled, taking a frantic step forward, completely ignoring the pain in his braced leg.
“Take one more step and he slits her throat!” Julian shrieked, backing up the metal stairs toward the catwalk. “Drop your weapons! All of you! Drop them or her blood is on your hands!”
The entire warehouse fell into a suffocating, horrifying silence.
Liam’s chest heaved with ragged breaths. His knuckles turned white around the grip of his .45.
“Let her go, Julian,” Liam pleaded, his voice cracking with an emotion none of his men had ever heard from him before—pure, desperate agony. “Take the ports. Take the council. Take everything. Just let her walk away.”
Julian laughed, a hysterical, broken sound that echoed off the high rafters.
“You love her!” Julian mocked, reaching the catwalk and standing beside my captor. “The great Liam Mercer, brought to his knees by a little hospital nurse! How pathetic!”
Julian grabbed my hair, yanking my head back, pressing the barrel of his revolver against my temple.
“On your knees, Liam!” Julian roared. “Drop the gun and get on your knees, or I pull this trigger right now!”
I looked down from the catwalk, looking straight into Liam’s tortured eyes.
“Don't do it, Liam!” I screamed through my tears. “Don't give up!”
“Shut up!” Julian snarled, striking me across the face with the barrel of the gun.

Seeing Julian strike me broke something fundamental inside Liam Mercer.
A terrifying, primordial roar tore from his throat—a sound of absolute, unbridled fury that shook the very foundations of the warehouse.
