Chapter 8 - The Viper in the Inner Circle

Leo entered the medical suite twenty minutes later, his face set in hard, grim lines. He carried a secure laptop and placed it on the rolling tray table in front of Liam.
“We traced the cyanide shipment,” Leo reported, tapping a key to bring up encrypted financial ledgers and surveillance footage. “The courier was paid through an offshore shell corporation based in the Caymans. But the order didn't come from Julian directly.”
Liam’s eyes narrowed into razor-sharp slits. “Who authorized the clearance code for the estate delivery gate?”
“Victor Vance,” Leo replied, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
Liam’s jaw tightened until the muscles threatened to snap. Victor Vance was the syndicate’s chief financial officer and Liam’s godfather—a man who had stood beside Liam’s father for thirty years.
“Victor has been playing both sides,” Leo continued. “Julian promised him fifty percent of the Mercer shipping ports once you were eliminated. Victor was the one who provided the floor plans for the mansion raid.”
“Where is he now?” Liam asked, his voice chillingly calm.
“Julian and Victor have called a mandatory meeting of the syndicate’s high council for tomorrow night at the Old Riverfront Warehouse,” Leo said. “Julian plans to present your death certificate, declare you officially deceased, and take the oath as the new head of the Mercer family.”
Liam stared at the glowing screen, his mind calculating moves with the cold precision of a grandmaster.
“He thinks he won,” Liam murmured. “He thinks I am lying in a morgue or burning in the ruins of the estate.”
“Boss,” Leo said cautiously, “Julian will have at least forty heavily armed guards surrounding the warehouse. The council members will all have their personal security details. If you walk in there without an army—”
“I don't need an army to reclaim what is mine,” Liam replied. He turned his gaze to me. “Clara.”
“Yes?”
“Can you remove the external fixator today?”
I gasped, shaking my head vehemently. “Liam, absolutely not! The bone needs at least two more weeks of stabilization! If I remove the pins now, the structural integrity of your femur will be compromised. Walking on it under combat conditions could cause a catastrophic refracture!”
Liam reached out, taking both of my hands into his large, warm palms. He looked into my eyes with an intensity that brooked no resistance.
“Clara, if Julian takes the council oath tomorrow night, he gains control of all Mercer assets. He will freeze the bank accounts, shut down the private air corridors, and Tommy’s medical transport in Zurich could be jeopardized. I have to end this tomorrow. For my family, for the syndicate, and for you.”
I looked at him, my heart aching with the terrifying weight of his words. He was willing to endure unimaginable physical agony to protect my brother and secure our future.
“If I take the pins out,” I said, my voice trembling with emotion, “you will wear a high-grade titanium orthopedic leg brace locked at zero degrees of flexion. You will use a cane, and you will not engage in hand-to-hand combat. Do you understand me?”
A faint, wicked smirk touched Liam’s lips. “Doctor's orders. Leo, get the surgical extraction tools.”
Two hours later, working under sterile conditions in the safe house clinic, I injected local anesthesia along each pin tract and carefully unscrewed the four titanium pins from Liam’s femur.
Liam didn't make a single sound, though his knuckles turned white against the operating table and sweat poured from his brow.
I cleaned and dressed the pin entry sites, then fitted his right leg with a customized, carbon-fiber and titanium supportive exoskeleton brace that locked his knee in place and transferred his body weight directly to his pelvis, bypassing the healing femur fracture.
When I finished, Liam slowly sat up and swung his legs over the edge of the bed.
He gripped the silver-handled combat cane Leo handed him, took a deep breath, and stood up.
He stood fully upright, six feet three inches of lethal, commanding power. He took one step forward, then another, his gait slightly stiff but completely stable.

He looked at his reflection in the mirror, then turned to me, his eyes burning with triumphant fire.
“Tomorrow night,” Liam said, his voice echoing with absolute authority, “the king returns to his throne.”
