Chapter 5 - A Bullet in the Dead of Night

Before our lips could meet, a thunderous explosion rocked the western wing of the mansion.
The heavy glass windows of the master suite shattered inward, showering the hardwood floor with a diamond storm of sharp fragments. The deafening roar of automatic gunfire ripped through the autumn night, accompanied by the high-pitched wail of tactical perimeter alarms.
“Down!” Liam roared, grabbing my scrub top and pulling me violently down onto the mattress beneath him.
A split second later, a hail of high-caliber bullets punched through the walls, obliterating the plaster, the antique mirrors, and the wooden armchairs. The drywall exploded in white chalky clouds, filling the air with the pungent stench of cordite and pulverized concrete.
“Leo!” Liam shouted, his voice cutting through the chaos.
The bedroom door was kicked open, and Leo dove inside, his body armor covered in dust and blood. He fired two controlled bursts back down the hallway before slamming the reinforced door and engaging the heavy steel deadbolts.
“It’s a strike team!” Leo shouted, reloading his tactical rifle with practiced speed. “Julian brought twenty mercenaries through the western gate! They blew the power substation—we’re on emergency backup!”
The overhead chandelier flickered and died, plunging the mansion into an eerie, pulsing crimson light from the emergency exit beacons.
“Where is my weapon?” Liam demanded, his voice dead-calm despite the bullets chewing through the heavy oak doors.
“Boss, your leg—”
“I said, where is my weapon?”
Leo reached behind his back, pulled a custom black Kimber .45 caliber handgun from his holster, and slapped it into Liam’s outstretched palm along with two spare magazines.
Liam racked the slide with a clean, metallic clack. The sheer transformation in his posture was terrifying. The wounded, bedridden patient had vanished completely; in his place stood the lethal commander of the Mercer syndicate, radiating cold, calculated lethality.
“Clara,” Liam commanded, his icy eyes locking onto mine through the red gloom. “Get behind the headboard. The mahogany is reinforced with ballistic steel plates. Do not move, do not stand up, no matter what happens.”
“Liam, you can’t walk on that femur!” I cried out, grabbing his arm. “The bone hasn't consolidated! You’ll destroy the graft!”
“I don't need to walk to kill these bastards,” he replied, a grim, terrifying smile touching his lips. “Leo, take the left angle. When the door breaches, take out the breacher first.”
BOOM!
A heavy breaching charge detonated against the master bedroom doors. The massive oak panels blew inward in a shower of splinters and twisted iron.
Three armed men in black tactical gear and night-vision goggles surged through the smoke.
Liam fired three shots in rapid succession.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The muzzle flash lit up his face in harsh, demonic relief. Each bullet found its mark with horrifying precision—center-mass, center-mass, headshot. The lead two mercenaries dropped instantly to the floor, dead before their bodies hit the hardwood.
Leo opened fire on the third, dropping him across the shattered threshold.
More footsteps pounded up the marble staircase outside—heavy, relentless, and numerous.
“There are too many of them!” Leo yelled, ducking as a burst of submachine-gun fire chipped away the doorframe. “Julian brought an entire hit squad!”
Liam gritted his teeth, his face pale with agony as he swung his shattered right leg over the side of the bed. The metal pins in his femur strained against his flesh, blood beginning to seep through his gray sweatpants, but he forced his left leg to bear his immense weight.
He stood up.
He leaned against the heavy mahogany bedpost, bracing his upper body, his gun raised level with the doorway.
“Julian!” Liam’s voice echoed down the smoke-filled corridor like the roar of a resurrected demon. “If you want my empire, come and take it yourself!”
A harsh, mocking laugh drifted up the stairwell.
“Look at you, big brother!” Julian’s voice called out from the darkness below. “Propped up on one leg like a broken scarecrow! Kill the guards and bring the nurse out alive—I want Liam to watch what I do to her before I slit his throat!”
Liam’s eyes turned pitch-black with murderous rage.
He looked over his shoulder at me, crouching behind the ballistic headboard, trembling with fear.
May you like
“Nobody touches you,” Liam whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute conviction. “Nobody.”
He turned back to the breached doorway, raised his weapon, and stepped directly into the line of fire.
