Chapter 11 - The Trap Springs Shut

Veronica Vance stared at me through the dim light of the hallway, her chest heaving as she tried to recover from the shock of my sudden appearance. For a second, the polished, untouchable Miami real estate queen looked like a cornered animal.
“You...” Veronica hissed, her eyes narrowing as she adjusted her footing on the polished wood. “You’re the old woman who ruined everything.”
“And you’re the con artist who thought she could fly three hundred miles across state lines to burglarize a retired schoolteacher’s home,” I replied evenly, not shifting my grip on the heavy brass umbrella stand by so much as a millimeter.
Veronica’s lips curled into a dangerous, predatory smile. She slowly slid her hand inside the deep front pocket of her tactical jacket. “You should have stayed out of my business, Eleanor. People who poke their noses into complex financial structures tend to have unfortunate accidents during severe thunderstorms.”
Before she could pull her hand from her pocket, the hallway lights blazed into blinding brilliance with a deafening click.
“Drop the weapon, Ms. Vance! Federal Marshals! Hands where we can see them!” shouted a deep, authoritative voice from the front doorway.
Three armed federal marshals in full tactical gear poured through the partially open front door, their assault rifles leveled squarely at Veronica’s chest. At the same time, Marcus Vance stepped calmly out from the study doorway behind her, holding a tablet displaying a live GPS tracking feed.
Veronica froze instantly. The tactical confidence drained out of her face, leaving her looking hollow and defeated. She slowly pulled her empty hand out of her pocket and raised both arms into the air.
“You... you set a trap,” Veronica whispered, her voice trembling with rage as cold steel handcuffs snapped around her wrists.
“Not a trap, Ms. Vance—a standard surveillance protocol,” Marcus corrected smoothly, walking over to pick up her dropped titanium briefcase with a gloved hand. “When you booked that private charter flight out of Opa-locka Airport under an alias three hours ago, our private aviation liaison notified the FAA and local federal marshals immediately. We knew you’d come for the backup ledger drives yourself.”
Rachel stepped out from the top of the stairs, wrapped in a bathrobe, watching quietly as the woman who had stolen her financial future was hauled away in handcuffs by federal officers.
As Veronica was escorted past the brass plaque by the front door, she glared at me with pure hatred. “This isn't over! My associates will—”

“Your associates are currently being rounded up in Miami, Dallas, and Las Vegas by the FBI as we speak,” Marcus interrupted with a polite smile. “Have a pleasant flight back to Florida, Ms. Vance. Economy class this time, I presume.”
The front door closed once more, sealing out the storm, the criminals, and the chaotic wreckage of the past.
