Chapter 17 - Shadows on the Horizon

Winter settled heavily over the suburbs, wrapping the neighborhood in a blanket of pristine white snow. The holidays came and went with a quiet grace that my home hadn't experienced in over a decade. Rachel spent Christmas Eve with me by the roaring fireplace, sharing stories of her architectural restoration projects and laughing with a lightness I hadn't heard in years. The nightmare of Trent Vance and Veronica Vance felt like a distant, faded storm.
Yet, in the legal world, loose threads rarely vanish into thin air. On a freezing Tuesday morning in early January, Marcus Vance appeared at my front door without an appointment, his breath pluming in the cold air as he stamped the snow from his leather boots.
“Eleanor, I apologize for the unannounced visit, but something just landed on my desk that requires your immediate attention,” Marcus said urgently as I ushered him into the warmth of the foyer.
I led him back to the study, where a pot of hot coffee was already brewing. We sat down, and Marcus slid a thick, unmarked manila envelope across the mahogany desk.
“What is this, Marcus?” I asked, sliding out a sheaf of international wire transfer logs and corporate registration certificates bearing letterheads from Zurich and Panama.
“When the federal marshals seized Veronica Vance’s Miami servers, they only decrypted eighty percent of her primary hard drives,” Marcus explained, tapping his fountain pen against the desk. “My forensic team just cracked the remaining encrypted partition last night. It turns out Veronica wasn’t just laundering money for Trent. She was a secondary proxy for a much larger international syndicate operating out of Eastern Europe—an organization known as ‘Sovereign Asset Holdings.’”
I scanned the pages, my eyes catching a familiar name embedded deep within the corporate hierarchy of the offshore syndicate. “Thomas Vance... no, wait. Arthur’s brother... no, look at this name: *Victor Vance*.”
“Correct,” Marcus nodded grimly. “Victor Vance is Trent’s estranged older brother—a high-level financial operative who skipped the country five years ago ahead of an FBI indictment for international securities fraud. According to these encrypted logs, Victor was the silent financial backer behind Trent’s entire operation. And more importantly... he knows you hold the original estate deeds to your late husband’s northern property.”
A cold chill settled in the room. I looked up from the papers, my eyes locking onto Marcus with fierce determination. “So Trent and Veronica weren't acting alone. They were just foot soldiers testing our defenses before the main architect made his move.”

“Precisely,” Marcus said softly. “And Victor Vance is currently residing in Geneva, Switzerland, completely out of direct U.S. federal extradition reach—unless we can prove he directly orchestrated the attempted estate forgery against your family.”
“Then let’s give him a reason to come looking for us,” I said calmly, a dangerous glint appearing in my eyes.
