Chapter 18 - The Geneva Trap

Setting a trap for an international financial fugitive requires patience, precision, and an absolute mastery of bait. Over the next three weeks, Marcus Vance and I worked in absolute secrecy with federal intelligence liaisons to construct a digital decoy that would draw Victor Vance out of his Swiss sanctuary and into a position where U.S. jurisdiction could reach him.

We leaked a carefully encrypted file through a secured financial portal known to be monitored by Sovereign Asset Holdings—a false digital ledger indicating that the original northern estate deeds held by Eleanor Vale were about to be auctioned off in a probate court liquidation in Miami, Florida.

For ten days, nothing happened. The snow outside my window melted into slush, and spring began to hint at its arrival with green shoots poking through the garden soil. Rachel continued her studies downtown, completely unaware of the high-stakes international game playing out behind the scenes.

Then, on a rainy Thursday afternoon, my burner phone—which I had reactivated specifically for this operation—buzzed on the study desk.

An incoming international call from a secure Geneva exchange.

I picked up the receiver and pressed it firmly to my ear.

“Mrs. Vale, I presume?” a smooth, cultured European voice asked, laced with an unmistakable undercurrent of menace.

“Who is speaking?” I replied evenly, my voice devoid of fear.

“My name is Victor Vance. You may recall my late brother Trent—and my business associate Veronica. You’ve been causing them a great deal of trouble lately,” Victor said smoothly, leaning into the threat. “I understand you are holding probate estate deeds that rightfully belong to our corporate syndicate.”

“I am holding the legal, undisputed property titles of my late husband and my family,” I replied sharply. “If you want them, Victor, you’ll have to come and claim them yourself.”

A dark, low chuckle echoed through the encrypted line. “Oh, don't worry, Mrs. Vale. I have a private jet touching down in Miami tomorrow morning. And I’ll be personally visiting your suburban home to collect what is mine.”

“I’ll leave the front door unlocked for you, Victor,” I said softly. “Bring your best legal team.”

I hung up the phone and looked over at Marcus Vance, who was sitting across the study with a digital recording device in his hand, a wide grin spreading across his face.

“He took the bait,” Marcus whispered. “Flight 409 from Geneva lands in Miami at 6:00 AM tomorrow. Federal marshals and Interpol are already waiting at the tarmac.”
