Chapter 4 - The Second Blow and the Flash Drive

This time, Trent didn't even care that Rachel was watching. Rage had completely eclipsed whatever rudimentary survival instincts he possessed. His hand swung through the air toward my face with terrifying velocity.

I didn't flinch. I didn't back away.

Instead, with preternatural calm, I pivoted smoothly on my heel, letting his fist graze my shoulder while my right hand slid swiftly into the pocket of my cardigan. My fingers closed around a small, matte-black USB flash drive.

The momentum of his punch carried Trent forward, crashing his chest hard against the granite kitchen island. He stumbled, cursing wildly as he caught his balance and spun around to face me.

“You think you’re smart, don't you?!” Trent roared, his face purple with fury. “You think a little internet research scares me? I’ll ruin you! I’ll file a slander lawsuit so big you’ll lose this house, your pension, and every penny you’ve ever saved!”

Rachel stood frozen, clutching her orange juice glass so tightly her knuckles turned ghostly white. Her eyes darted back and forth between her enraged husband and her calm, unblinking mother.

“Trent... stop it!” Rachel screamed, her voice cracking with hysteria. “You just tried to hit her again! In my presence!”

“Shut up, Rachel!” Trent snapped back, his mask completely shredded. “If you hadn't been so weak-willed and soft, we wouldn't be in this mess! Your mother is a parasite trying to destroy our marriage!”

The words hung in the air like poison gas. Rachel staggered backward as if she had been physically struck. The illusion she had lived inside for five years—the illusion of the brilliant, successful tech entrepreneur husband—shattered completely into dust.

“Our... marriage?” Rachel whispered, tears finally spilling down her cheeks. “The house... the five hundred thousand dollars... it was all a lie, wasn't it? You never invested it. You used it to pay off your personal debts.”

Trent’s expression flickered with panic, but arrogance quickly took its place. “Of course I invested it! But high-risk tech ventures take time—”

“It’s not in tech, Trent,” I interrupted smoothly, pulling the black USB drive out of my pocket and holding it up between my fingers. “It’s currently sitting in a personal checking account under your mother’s name in Miami, Florida, designated for the purchase of a luxury beachfront condo. I received the wire transfer alerts from my private forensic accountant thirty minutes ago.”

Trent stared at the flash drive in my hand as if it were a venomous snake. All the color vanished from his face, leaving him looking sickly and gray.

“You... you hacked my accounts?” he choked out.

“No, Trent,” I smiled softly, my bruised lip stretching painfully. “I didn't have to hack anything. Your Miami banking partner, a man named Marcus Vance’s financial intelligence division, subpoenaed your institutional routing numbers at 8:00 AM under emergency federal anti-fraud provisions. The freeze orders are already executed.”

Before Trent could process the devastating magnitude of my words, the heavy front doorbell rang. It wasn't a polite knock. It was three loud, authoritative thuds that shook the entire foundation of the house.

“Open up! County Sheriff’s Department! Execute search and seizure warrants!” a booming voice echoed from the front porch.

Trent bolted toward the back door, but two burly deputies in tactical vests stepped smoothly through the doorway, blocking his only exit.
