Chapter 14 - The Second Web

I invited Jonathan Sterling into the study, offering him a seat across from my desk while I poured two cups of hot black coffee. The rain had started again, tapping a gentle, rhythmic tattoo against the study windows.
“Mr. Sterling, you mentioned other members of my family,” I began immediately, sitting down and folding my hands over the mahogany desktop. “Explain what you mean by that.”
Jonathan opened his leather portfolio and pulled out a certified banking ledger, sliding it across the table toward me. “When federal investigators seized Veronica Vance’s primary digital servers in Miami last week, they didn't just find the records of Rachel’s five hundred thousand dollars. They uncovered an intricate network of secondary wire transfers dating back over three years.”
I put on my reading glasses and scanned the financial routing numbers. My eyes locked onto a familiar surname listed as a secondary beneficiary on a trust account based in the Cayman Islands.
“My brother, Thomas Vale,” I murmured, my voice dropping an octave as cold realization washed over me. “Thomas died five years ago.”
“Formally, yes,” Jonathan nodded grimly. “However, according to these corporate filings, Thomas’s estate—managed by an executor named Richard Vance, no relation to Veronica—was quietly funneled into one of Trent’s shell companies just six months before your daughter sold her house.”
The puzzle pieces clicked into place with horrifying clarity. Trent hadn't just targeted Rachel because she was vulnerable and in love; he had targeted our family because he knew our ancestral estate holdings in the northern county were valued at over two million dollars, and Thomas’s dormant estate was the key to unlocking them through fraudulent probate claims.
“He was playing a long game,” I whispered, the cold anger rising like a tide in my chest. “Trent wasn't just a petty con artist running a tech scam. He was an organized syndicate operative specializing in elder financial abuse and estate hijacking.”
“Exactly,” Jonathan confirmed, leaning forward. “And now that Trent is locked up and Veronica is cooperating with federal prosecutors in exchange for a reduced sentence, we have proof that they planned to file fraudulent probate claims against your primary residential deed using forged signatures from your late brother’s estate.”
I looked up at Jonathan, a cold, hard smile forming on my lips. “They thought I was just a lonely old widow living in a quiet suburb. They didn't realize I still had Arthur’s complete archive of estate deeds locked in the basement safe.”

“Mrs. Vale, what are your instructions?” Jonathan asked, pencil poised over his notepad.
“Tell Marcus Vance to reopen our civil litigation file,” I instructed calmly. “We aren’t just stopping at the five hundred thousand dollars anymore. We are going to dismantle every single corporation Trent and Veronica ever touched, down to the last penny.”
