Chapter 10 - Clear Skies and Calm Seas

Lucian's eyes softened, a profound warmth filling his dark gaze as he pulled me closer against his chest. He leaned down and kissed me, a long, passionate kiss that tasted of ocean breeze and sweet promise.

"I love you, Maya," he whispered against my lips. "More than my empire. More than my life."

A car horn honked playfully from the driveway.

We turned around to see a brand-new white SUV parked outside the cottage. The passenger door flew open, and a healthy, energetic nine-year-old boy came running down the wooden dock toward us, laughing loudly.

"Maya! Lucian!" Danny shouted, his face full of color, his chest expanding fully without a single cough or wheeze.

"Danny!" I gasped, tears of joy welling in my eyes as I ran forward to meet him.

I scooped my little brother up into a tight hug, spinning him around on the dock. Hearing his strong, healthy laughter was the greatest sound in the entire world—a sound I had feared I would never hear again.

"Look at me, Maya!" Danny giggled, jumping up and down on the wooden planks. "The doctor in Switzerland said I can join the swim team next month! He said my lungs are totally fixed!"

"You're going to be the fastest swimmer in the state," I laughed, wiping happy tears from my cheeks.

Lucian walked over, placing a gentle hand on Danny's shoulder. Danny looked up at Lucian with absolute hero-worship in his eyes.

"Thanks for taking me on the big airplane, Lucian," Danny said proudly. "And thanks for the cool video games in the hospital!"

Lucian smiled warmly, kneeling down to be at eye level with my brother. "Anytime, buddy. But remember our deal: you have to help me look after your big sister."

"Deal!" Danny grinned, giving Lucian a high-five.

Viktor stepped out from the driver's seat of the SUV, carrying Danny's luggage. He smiled faintly at the scene—a rare, genuine expression on the hardened bodyguard's face. "The transfer is complete, Mr. Thorne. All medical records have been updated and closed."

"Thank you, Viktor," Lucian said, standing up. "Take the week off. You've earned it."

"Thank you, sir," Viktor nodded, tipping his hat to me before driving away, leaving the three of us alone in the tranquil evening light.

Later that evening, after Danny had tired himself out exploring his brand-new room and fallen fast asleep, Lucian and I sat on the back porch deck, watching the stars fill the clear night sky.

A cool autumn breeze blew off the water, but I was completely warm, wrapped in Lucian's arms beneath a soft wool blanket.

"So, boss," I teased softly, looking up at his sharp jawline. "What happens now? Does the head of the Thorne Syndicate just spend his weekends sitting on a quiet dock in Maine?"

Lucian chuckled softly, his dark eyes sparkling under the starlight. "The syndicate is in good hands. I've appointed a regional council to manage the day-to-day shipping operations. I bought a stake in the local marine research institute."

I sat up, staring at him in shock. "You did what?"

"They were underfunded," Lucian said casually, stroking my hair gently. "And I happen to know a brilliant marine biologist who deserves to be the Chief Director of Safety and Research."

"Lucian..." I gasped, overwhelmed by his gesture. "You bought an institute for me?"

"I bought it for us," Lucian corrected softly, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small velvet jewelry box. "Because my life started the night you pulled me out of the water, Maya. And I want to spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to face another storm alone."

He opened the box. Inside was a stunning platinum ring featuring a rare, brilliant blue diamond that shimmered like the surface of a sunlit ocean.

My hands flew to my mouth, my eyes overflowing with fresh tears.

"Maya Vance," Lucian said, his voice deep, rich, and full of raw emotion. "Will you marry me?"

I looked at the ring, then at the incredible, brave, protective man holding it. The dark waters of my past had finally receded, replaced by a bright, beautiful future filled with love and safety.

"Yes," I whispered, throwing my arms around his neck. "Yes, Lucian! A thousand times yes!"

He slipped the ring onto my finger, pulling me into a fierce, loving embrace as the gentle waves clapped softly against the shore beneath us.

May you like

The night that started with fire and blood in the dark sea had led us to this perfect, calm horizon. We had survived the storm, and together, the waters ahead were clear, peaceful, and endless.

THE END
