Chapter 7 - Secrets Beneath the Surface

"Fire!" Julian shrieked in panic, diving behind a metal shipping container.
Instantly, the quiet harbor erupted into absolute gunfire chaos.
Julian’s guards opened fire with submachine guns, bullets ricocheting off steel containers with terrifying sparks. Viktor and Lucian’s tactical team retaliated instantly, taking down three mercenaries in the opening salvo.
"Maya, stay down!" Viktor roared, pushing me behind a heavy concrete pylon as lead cracked through the air above us.
Through the fog and muzzle flashes, I saw Arthur Pendelton scrambling toward a parked SUV, clutching a leather briefcase containing the syndicate's master accounts.
"The accounts!" I yelled to Lucian. "He's taking the master ledgers!"
If Pendelton escaped with those ledgers, Julian’s faction could transfer billions into offshore accounts before Lucian could reclaim control.
Without thinking about the danger, I broke cover, sprinting through the shadows between the shipping containers to intercept Pendelton.
"Maya, no!" Lucian shouted over the deafening gunfire, turning to follow me.
Pendelton reached the door of the SUV, his hands shaking violently as he tried to insert the key. I tackled him from behind with all the momentum I had. We both slammed onto the wet asphalt. The leather briefcase flew from his grip, bursting open and scattering hundreds of classified documents across the damp dock.
"Get off me, girl!" Pendelton screamed, reaching into his coat for a snub-nosed revolver.
I grabbed a heavy steel wrench lying near a maintenance crate and swung it with all my strength, striking Pendelton’s wrist. He cried out in pain, dropping the gun.
Before he could recover, Lucian arrived like an enraged shadow. He grabbed Pendelton by his lapels, lifting the old man completely off his feet and slamming him violently against the side of the SUV.
"Where is Julian?" Lucian growled, his gun barrel pressed hard into Pendelton’s forehead.
"Please... Lucian... mercy!" Pendelton sobbed, hyperventilating in sheer terror. "Julian forced me! He threatened my family! He... he's fleeing toward the dry docks!"
Lucian sneered with cold disgust, handing the trembling traitor over to Viktor. "Lock him in the van."
Suddenly, a loud engine roared from the far end of the pier. A heavy industrial forklift came crashing through a line of wooden crates, charging directly toward us at full speed!
Julian was at the wheel of the heavy machine, his face twisted with insane rage. "Die, both of you!"
"Look out!" I screamed.
Lucian grabbed my waist and threw us both sideways onto the wet dock just as the forklift smashed into the silver sedan behind us, crumpling the car like an aluminum can in a massive screech of tearing metal.
We rolled across the slick concrete, coming to a stop near the edge of the pier. Lucian immediately wrapped his body over mine, shielding me from flying debris and twisted metal.
I looked up into his face. He was breathing heavily, a small trickle of fresh blood running down his cheek from where a metal fragment had grazed him. But his dark eyes were filled with intense, burning concern as he searched my face.
"Are you hurt?" he rasped out, his hand gently cupping my cheek. "Maya, answer me!"
"I'm... I'm okay," I whispered, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs—not just from the explosion, but from the electric warmth of his hands holding me.
He breathed a visible sigh of relief, his thumb softly brushing across my lips. "You crazy, brave woman," he murmured softly. "You almost got yourself killed."
"I told you I'm not a victim," I said, a faint smile breaking through my panic.
A sharp gunshot echoed nearby, shattering the moment.
Julian had abandoned the forklift and was running up the metal stairs of the harbor's massive gantry crane, clutching an automatic rifle.

"Lucian!" Viktor yelled, firing at Julian's position. "He's climbing to the upper crane platform! He has higher ground!"
Lucian stood up, his face hardening into pure marble. "Not for long."
