Chapter 8 - The Price of Loyalty

Rain began to pour from the pitch-black sky, turning the metal rungs of the massive industrial crane into slick, treacherous ladders.

Lucian pursued Julian up the crane, climbing relentlessly through the dark structure. I refused to stay below. Ignoring Viktor's frantic calls to remain at ground level, I climbed up the secondary maintenance ladder on the opposite side of the crane tower.

At eighty feet above the dark ocean, the wind howled violently. Ocean waves crashed against the concrete pylons far below with gut-wrenching force.

Julian reached the main crane control platform, cornered against the iron safety railing with nowhere left to run. He turned, firing wild bursts down the narrow catwalk.

"Stay back, Lucian!" Julian shrieked, his voice cracking with unhinged panic. "I'll shoot you! I swear to God I'll drop you into the ocean again!"

Lucian stepped calmly onto the platform out of the shadows, completely unbothered by the wild gunfire. His black coat whipped violently in the ocean gale. He didn't even raise his gun; he just walked toward his cousin with absolute, terrifying calm.

"You tried to kill me on my own vessel, Julian," Lucian said, his deep voice carrying clearly over the howling wind. "You destroyed innocent lives. You dishonored our family name."

"This empire was meant for me!" Julian screamed, tears of rage mixing with the pouring rain on his face. "My father built half these docks! You treated me like an underling, an errand boy!"

"I treated you like a brother," Lucian corrected coldly. "And you sold your soul for power you aren't strong enough to hold."

I quietly reached the top rung of my ladder, stepping onto the back section of the platform behind Julian.

Julian heard my footstep on the wet grating and spun around wildly, grabbing me by the hair and pulling me violently against his chest, slamming the cold steel barrel of his rifle against my temple!

"Stop right there, Lucian!" Julian screamed, using me as a human shield. "One more step and I blow her brains out!"

Lucian froze instantly. The cold, lethal composure on his face cracked, replaced by a raw, terrifying panic I had never seen in him before.

"Let her go, Julian," Lucian said softly, his voice trembling with deadly restraint. "This is between you and me. She has nothing to do with this."

"She has everything to do with this!" Julian spat, tightening his painful grip on my hair. "She's the reason you're alive! If she hadn't fished you out of the water, I would be running the syndicate right now!"

"Take me instead," Lucian offered immediately, dropping his handgun onto the wet metal platform. It skidded away into the dark. "Take my life. Let her walk down that ladder unharmed."

I stared at Lucian in shock. The powerful, ruthless mafia boss was willing to surrender his life to save mine.

"Lucian, no!" I cried out. "Don't do it!"

Julian laughed maniacally, enjoying the utter surrender of his rival. "Look at the mighty Lucian Thorne, begging on his knees for a woman! You've gone soft, cousin!"

"I haven't gone soft," Lucian whispered, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an unspoken signal. "I've just found something worth dying for."

In that split second, I understood.

Using my marine rescue training—where we learn to disable panicked drowner grips—I slammed my heel down onto Julian's foot while driving my elbow backwards into his ribs.

Julian grunted in pain, his grip loosening for a fraction of a second.

I dropped to my knees on the wet deck.

Lucian lunged forward like an apex predator, tackling Julian across the platform. They slammed into the rusted safety railing with immense force. The old iron bars groaned and snapped under their combined weight!

Julian lost his footing, slipping over the edge into empty air, his hands wildly catching the outer ledge of the catwalk.

He dangled eighty feet above the black, churning ocean, screaming in terror. "Lucian! Help me! Grab my hand! Please!"

Lucian stood at the broken railing, looking down at the man who had tried to murder him. The rain washed the blood from Lucian's face.

For three long seconds, Lucian didn't move.

"Please, cousin!" Julian wept, his fingers slipping on the wet metal. "Family!"

Lucian slowly reached down and grabbed Julian's wrist. He held him over the abyss.

"You gave up the right to call me family when you targeted an innocent woman," Lucian said quietly. "Goodbye, Julian."

May you like

Lucian released his grip.

Julian screamed as he plunged into the dark night, hitting the black water eighty feet below with a distant splash, swallowed completely by the roaring ocean tide.
