Chapter 3 - Escape from the Coast

Glass showered the hardwood floor as automatic gunfire tore through my living room, shredding the curtains and pulverizing my drywall into clouds of white dust.

I screamed, dropping to my knees and clutching the aluminum briefcase against my chest. The deafening roar of gunshots reverberated inside the small cottage.

Viktor stood unfazed, returning fire through the broken window with methodical, deadly precision. Two muffled pops echoed from his weapon, followed immediately by a heavy thump and a groan outside.

"Move, Maya! Out the back!" Viktor barked, his voice steady despite the chaos.

I didn't hesitate. Survival instinct, honed by years of emergency response drills, took over. I scrambled across the floor, ducking beneath the counter as another burst of bullets shattered my kitchen cabinets, sending dinner plates and coffee mugs crashing down around me.

I smashed open the back door and plunged into the cold, rainy night. My feet tore through the mud as I ran frantically toward the thick pine forest bordering my property. Behind me, the sound of glass breaking and doors being kicked off their hinges echoed above the sound of falling rain.

"She went into the woods! Get her!" a harsh voice yelled from the yard.

I sprinted through the dark trees, branches tearing at my jacket and scraping my face. The weight of two million dollars in my arms felt like an anchor, but I refused to drop it. My lungs burned with every breath. I knew these woods like the back of my hand—I had hiked them every weekend since childhood.

I scrambled down a steep ravine, slid through a muddy creek, and ducked beneath the heavy overhang of a fallen cedar tree, pulling my knees to my chest and pressing my hand over my mouth to quiet my terrified breathing.

Footsteps crunched on the wet pine needles above. Flashlight beams cut through the gloom, crisscrossing through the rain just feet above my hiding spot.

"Anything?" a voice asked.

"No. Bitch vanished. What about Viktor?"

"Dead or wounded, doesn't matter. Julian wants the girl killed tonight. Search the ridge!"

The footsteps began to recede into the distance. I held my breath, tears burning behind my eyes. My home was gone. My safe, quiet life was shattered into pieces.

Suddenly, a hand reached out from the darkness behind me and clamped tightly over my mouth.

I gasped and thrashed violently, raising the heavy metal briefcase to strike my captor.

"Quiet if you want to live," a smooth, deep voice whispered directly against my ear.

The scent of cedar, salt, and faint expensive cologne filled my senses.

Lucian.

I stopped fighting. He slowly released his grip, leaning back against the dirt wall of the overhang. In the faint moonlight filtering through the branches, I saw he was wearing a heavy black tactical coat. His head was cleanly bandaged beneath a black beanie, his jaw firm and dark eyes burning with dangerous intensity.

"You came back?" I whispered angrily, shivering violently from rain and shock.

"I didn't come back for fun, Maya," Lucian said quietly, his voice low and dangerous. "I came because Viktor alerted me the moment your station's firewall was breached. I couldn't let Julian's hit squad murder the woman who pulled me from the ocean."

"They destroyed my house! They know about Danny!" I sobbed, frustration and terror spilling over. "You brought this nightmare to my door!"

Lucian reached out, his gloved fingers surprisingly gentle as he caught my chin, forcing me to look directly into his dark eyes. "Listen to me very carefully, Maya. You are alive because you are smart and fast. But right now, you have a choice. You can stay here, and Julian's men will eventually circle back and find you. Or you can come with me, and I will guarantee your safety and your brother's protection."

"How can you protect anyone? You're on the run!" I spat back.

"I am never on the run," Lucian said coldly, a lethal confidence radiating from him. "I am simply positioning my pieces for the counter-attack. Now, give me your phone."

"My phone?"

"They can track the GPS signal," he said. Before I could object, he slid my phone from my pocket, snapped it cleanly in half with his bare hands, and tossed the pieces into the creek. "From this second forward, you don't exist. You are with me."

He stood up, towering over me in the shadows, and held out his hand.

I looked at his outstretched hand, then back toward the burning remnants of my home in the distance. The quiet life I knew was dead. The only way forward was through the storm with the dangerous man sitting in front of me.

I took his hand. His grip was warm, iron-strong, and unyielding.

"Where are we going?" I asked as he pulled me up.

Lucian’s lips curved into a cold, shadow-draped smile. "To take back my empire."
