Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

The high-end SUV glided silently through the iron gates of a massive, secluded estate hidden deep within the forested hills of upstate New York. The property was fortified like a military compound—twelve-foot stone walls topped with razor wire, infrared security cameras, and armed guards in dark tactical gear patrolling the perimeter with sleek assault rifles.
"Welcome to the Citadel," Lucian said quietly from the leather back seat beside me.
I held the aluminum briefcase tightly in my lap. I hadn't let go of it since we fled the coast. "It looks like a prison."
"It's a fortress," Lucian corrected softly. "Built by my grandfather fifty years ago for times like this. No one gets in without my personal authorization. Julian doesn't even know this location exists."
The vehicle pulled up to the front steps of a grand European-style mansion. As the door opened, a familiar tall figure stepped forward to open my passenger door.
"Viktor!" I gasped in relief. "You're alive!"
Viktor gave me a faint, respectful nod, though a blood-stained bandage was wrapped tightly around his left shoulder. "It takes more than three of Julian's amateur hitmen to end me, Miss Vance. I am glad you are unharmed."
Lucian stepped out of the vehicle and motioned for me to follow him inside. The interior of the mansion was breathtaking—Soaring ceilings, marble floors, priceless Renaissance oil paintings, and grand crystal chandeliers shedding warm light over rich mahogany furniture. It was a stark contrast to my modest seaside cottage.
"Take Miss Vance to the primary guest suite," Lucian instructed a maid waiting in the foyer. "Ensure she has clean clothes, warm food, and anything else she requires."
"Lucian, wait," I called out, stepping toward him. "We need to talk. What about my brother? You promised he would be safe."
Lucian turned, taking off his black coat and handing it to an attendant. His dark hair was styled back, revealing the neatly stitched scar across his left temple—my work from forty-eight hours ago.
"Your brother Danny was moved two hours ago," Lucian said smoothly. "My private medical team transferred him from the St. Jude facility to a private cardiac specialist clinic in Switzerland under an assumed name. He is safe, Maya. He has around-the-clock private security and the best doctors money can buy."
My heart did a strange flip in my chest. A mix of overwhelming relief and deep mistrust flooded my mind. "Switzerland? You moved him across the world without asking me?"
"I moved him to where Julian's reach cannot touch him," Lucian said, stepping closer until he stood inches away from me. His towering height and commanding aura made the vast entryway feel suddenly small. "In my world, hesitation gets people killed. I act quickly to protect what is mine."
"I am not yours," I said fiercely, locking eyes with him.
Lucian's lips twitched with a ghost of an amused smile. "You saved my life, Maya. That makes your safety my personal responsibility whether you like it or not."
"And the two million dollars?" I asked, gesturing to the briefcase Viktor was holding.
"A gesture of goodwill," Lucian replied softly. "Consider it a retainer. You are going to be staying here for a few days while I settle my affairs with Julian."
"Settle your affairs? You mean murder him?"
Lucian's dark eyes turned icy, the warmth vanishing completely. "Julian betrayed the syndicate. He tried to sink my boat with six of my men still on board. He turned my own territory into a warzone and sent hitmen to slaughter an innocent woman in her home. In my organization, treason carries only one sentence."
He turned on his heel and began walking up the grand staircase. "Rest tonight, Maya. Tomorrow, the war begins."
That night, I sat in a massive bedroom lined with silk tapestries and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the misty forest. I couldn't sleep. The luxury around me felt like a golden cage. I was a marine biologist who spent her weeks studying tidal currents, now trapped in the epicenter of a brutal mafia power struggle.

And worst of all, every time I closed my eyes, I didn't see the burning yacht or the gunshots at my cottage.
I saw Lucian's intense, dark eyes looking down at me in the rain, promising to protect me from the world.
