Chapter 13 - The Poisoned Partnership

The warning signs began subtly, the way structural cracks form deep inside the foundation of a building before the walls finally cave in. Two weeks after Ryan’s threatening phone call, a sudden wave of negative press articles appeared in several regional North Carolina business blogs, questioning the financial transparency and legitimacy of *Ascent Wealth & Advocacy*.

The articles didn't mention my lottery win directly, but they subtly insinuated that our rapid corporate growth and our recent partnership with the Vance Architectural Foundation’s pediatric endowment were built on 'questionable regulatory loopholes' and 'undisclosed conflicts of interest.'

Elena Vance rushed into my office on a Tuesday morning, slamming a printed copy of a digital blog post onto my desk. “Claire, you need to see this. Someone is feeding fabricated tips to financial journalists in Charlotte and Raleigh. They’re trying to imply that our foundation work is an unregulated slush fund.”

I scanned the article quickly, my eyes narrowing as I recognized the signature venom of corporate smear tactics. This wasn't standard investigative journalism; it was a targeted hit job designed to trigger a state regulatory audit and damage our reputation right before the official groundbreaking ceremony for the Asheville pediatric wing.

“Who authorized the press release regarding the endowment details?” I asked calmly, looking up at Elena.

“Only three people had access to the final financial schedule: you, Julian, and senior partner Thomas Sterling from the foundation’s auditing board,” Elena replied, her brow furrowed in concern.

My heart skipped a beat. *Thomas Sterling.* He wasn't just a foundation board member; he was a distant cousin of David Sterling, my personal financial adviser. More importantly, public records searches quietly conducted by my private security team revealed that Thomas Sterling had recently held several closed-door meetings with a disbarred corporate attorney who used to represent Ryan Reynolds.

The puzzle pieces clicked together with terrifying clarity. Ryan hadn't acted alone. Even from the gutter, he had managed to find a disgruntled, corrupt insider willing to sell out the foundation just to settle a personal score and extort a massive payout.

Before I could instruct Marcus to initiate a full forensic audit of the foundation’s communications, my office phone rang. It was Julian.

“Claire, have you seen the articles?” Julian’s voice was taut with suppressed fury. “The board of directors is panicking. Some of our major corporate donors are calling my office demanding an immediate internal investigation before we break ground next month.”

“I’ve seen them, Julian,” I replied steadily. “And I know exactly who is behind it. It’s not a random leak. It’s a coordinated extortion attempt orchestrated by my ex-husband through a corrupt board member named Thomas Sterling.”

A heavy silence hung over the phone line for several seconds. When Julian spoke again, his voice was chillingly cold. “Thomas Sterling? He’s been on our board for five years. If he’s compromised, we need to cut the rot out immediately.”

“Don’t fire him yet,” I instructed sharply. “Let’s give him enough rope to hang himself. If we expose him publicly without airtight proof of his financial collusion with Ryan’s associates, he’ll claim whistleblower immunity and drag the foundation through a messy public trial.”

“What do you propose we do, Claire?” Julian asked, a note of deep respect in his tone.

“We set a trap,” I replied, a cold, calculated smile forming on my lips. “If Thomas wants to sell our financial records to the highest bidder, let’s give him a very specific, heavily encrypted digital file containing fictionalized audit trails that point straight back to his personal offshore accounts. When he hands those files to Ryan’s associates, we’ll catch them red-handed in a federal wire fraud conspiracy.”

“I love the way your mind works, Claire,” Julian laughed softly, a rich, dark sound of absolute admiration. “Let’s lay the trap.”
