Chapter 3 - The Smear Campaign and the Counter-Attack

By Tuesday morning, the local news outlets and social media gossip pages had picked up the story of my massive lottery win. While most of the commentary focused on my inspiring journey as an expectant mother turning her life around after sudden hardship, a dark undercurrent quickly began to spread across local Facebook community groups.

Anonymous posts started appearing on neighborhood boards in Raleigh, painting me as a cold, manipulative fraud. One viral post, written by a burner account but sharing suspiciously specific details about our marriage, claimed that I had trapped Ryan with a fake pregnancy, stolen his life savings, and abandoned him just to claim sole ownership of a lottery ticket bought with his hard-earned money.

Mrs. Alvarez called me in a fury, her voice trembling with indignation. “Claire, have you seen what people are posting online? Some coward is spreading vile lies about you on the Raleigh Community Board! They’re saying you tricked Ryan and staged the whole thing!”

“I saw it, Mrs. Alvarez,” I replied calmly, scrolling through the hateful comments on my phone while sitting at my kitchen island. “Don’t worry. Every single word of it is traceable.”

I didn't need to be a digital forensics expert to know who was behind it. Vanessa’s background was in corporate PR and digital reputation management; dirty online smear campaigns were literally her specialty. She and Ryan were trying to damage my public image so severely that the lottery commission or public opinion would turn against me, forcing me into a messy, public settlement out of sheer exhaustion.

Instead of panicking, I forwarded the links directly to Naomi Brooks and my newly appointed crisis PR team—a high-powered agency Naomi recommended specifically for high-profile lottery winners.

“Give these posts twenty-four hours to gather maximum engagement,” the lead PR strategist, Marcus Vance, told me during our afternoon Zoom conference. “Let Ryan and Vanessa dig their graves as deep as possible. Once they have published enough defamatory statements under verifiable IP addresses, we strike with absolute precision.”

True to his word, Marcus’s team quietly tracked the digital footprints of the burner accounts straight back to Vanessa’s apartment router and Ryan’s office IP address. They also gathered public comments where Ryan’s close friends and colleagues chimed in, repeating defamatory falsehoods that crossed the strict legal line into tortious interference and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

On Thursday afternoon, while Ryan was sitting in a high-level executive meeting at his architectural firm, two uniformed county sheriff’s deputies walked straight through the glass doors of his office building and handed him a massive stack of legal documents.

It wasn't just a routine divorce filing. It was a multi-million-dollar defamation, slander, and civil conspiracy lawsuit filed on my behalf by Naomi Brooks, complete with forensic evidence proving that Vanessa and Ryan had orchestrated a coordinated online smear campaign.

My phone buzzed furiously while I was resting on the sofa. Even though I had blocked Ryan’s personal number, he had resorted to calling from a restricted office line. I let it ring out to voicemail. Within minutes, an urgent email from Ryan’s corporate address popped up in my inbox.

*Claire, please, you’ve gone too far! Process servers at my office? Do you want to ruin my entire career over a petty online argument? Call me right now so we can settle this like adults before my partners find out about this lawsuit!*

I opened the email, typed a short, blistering response, and hit send.

*Your career was ruined the moment you decided to steal from a pregnant woman and sic your mistress on my reputation, Ryan. See you in court.*

I closed my laptop and smiled softly. The war was just getting started, and Ryan was about to learn that thirty-eight million dollars bought a lot of justice.
