Chapter 8 - Vanessa’s Desperate Gamble

With Ryan locked behind bars and facing an airtight confession drafted by Naomi Brooks, Vanessa realized she was entirely isolated. Her high-rise apartment lease was officially terminated for non-payment, her luxury car was repossessed from the parking garage on Sunday morning, and her professional network had completely blacklisted her after discovering her involvement in the cyber-smear campaign against a high-profile lottery winner.
Desperate and cornered, Vanessa decided to launch one final, reckless offensive. But instead of targeting me through anonymous online forums or legal motions, she decided to confront me face-to-face.
It was Monday afternoon. I was at my high-end downtown Raleigh law office finalizing the final trust documents with David Sterling when my private security supervisor, Marcus Vance, knocked urgently on the conference room door.
“Mrs. Reynolds, we have an issue downstairs,” Marcus said calmly, keeping his voice steady. “Ms. Miller managed to bypass the building’s lower lobby security by slipping in behind a delivery courier. She’s currently standing outside our private elevator lobby on the twelfth floor, demanding to speak with you.”
“Should we escort her out the building, Claire?” Naomi asked, reaching for her desk phone to call building security.
“No,” I said slowly, standing up from my chair and smoothing down my emerald maternity blouse. “Let her up. I want to see what she has to say for herself now that her meal ticket is wearing an orange jumpsuit.”
Five minutes later, the elevator doors chimed, and Vanessa stepped out into the sleek reception foyer. She looked nothing like the polished corporate marketing consultant who had seduced Ryan in five-star hotel bars. Her hair was messy, her designer blazer was wrinkled, and her eyes were wild and bloodshot with rage and exhaustion.
“Claire!” Vanessa shrieked, marching toward the glass double doors before Marcus gently stepped into her path, blocking her way.
“Keep your distance, Ms. Miller,” Marcus warned in a low, dangerous tone.
“Get your hands off me!” Vanessa yelled, pointing a trembling finger straight at me through the glass. “You think you’ve won everything, don’t you? You think thirty-eight million dollars makes you untouchable? You stole Ryan from me! You trapped him with a baby just to lock down his future!”
I walked slowly toward the glass doors, stopping just inches away from her, separated only by thick, bulletproof acoustic glass. I looked at her with absolute pity and calm superiority.
“Stole him, Vanessa?” I asked, my voice calm and steady. “You can keep him. He’s currently sitting in a Wake County jail cell wearing an orange jumpsuit, crying on recorded phone lines and begging me to save him from a felony conviction by signing a full confession that puts all the blame squarely on your shoulders.”
Vanessa’s face went completely pale. Her jaw dropped as the reality of Ryan’s betrayal hit her like a physical blow. “He... he wouldn't do that. We had a plan...”
“A plan to steal my home, drain my accounts, and leave me destitute with an unborn child?” I asked, raising an eyebrow. “Ryan isn't loyal to you, Vanessa. He’s loyal to whoever has the most money and the least amount of trouble. The moment things got hard, he threw you under the bus without a second thought.”
“You ruined my life!” Vanessa screamed, lunging forward in a blind rage, scratching against the glass before Marcus firmly pinned her arms behind her back.
“No, Vanessa. You ruined your own life the moment you decided to build your future on stolen foundations,” I said coldly, turning my back on her. “Marcus, escort her out of the building and make sure building security files a permanent trespass order against her. If she ever comes within five miles of me again, have her arrested immediately.”

As Marcus dragged a screaming, kicking Vanessa toward the service elevator, I felt a profound sense of closure. The parasites who had tried to destroy my life were finally eating each other alive.
Little did I know, a much sweeter arrival was just hours away.
