Chapter 14 - The Sting at the Mountain Lodge

The trap was set for a rainy Saturday evening at an exclusive, secluded mountain lodge just outside of Asheville. According to the digital breadcrumbs our forensic IT team planted inside the encrypted decoy files, Thomas Sterling had arranged a clandestine midnight meeting with his intermediaries to hand over the final 'damning evidence' against *Ascent Wealth & Advocacy*.

Marcus Vance and his tactical security team had the lodge completely surrounded three hours before the meeting was scheduled to begin. High-definition night-vision cameras and audio bugs recorded every square foot of the private dining room where Thomas Sterling was set to meet his co-conspirators.

I sat in the back of Marcus’s command SUV parked down a wooded access road, watching the live video monitors on my tablet alongside Julian Vance. The rain drummed a steady, hypnotic rhythm against the armored roof of the vehicle.

“He’s arriving now,” Marcus murmured, pointing to one of the monitors as a dark sedan pulled into the deserted parking lot of the lodge.

We watched as Thomas Sterling stepped out of his car, carrying a sleek leather briefcase containing the decoy USB drive. He hurried through the rain into the private dining room of the lodge. Ten minutes later, a second vehicle arrived. A man stepped out wearing a heavy hooded jacket and pulled down his cap—but not before the infrared cameras captured a crystal-clear profile shot.

It wasn't Ryan himself—Ryan was too cowardly to risk violating his probation. It was his former defense attorney, a disgraced lawyer named Marcus Thorne who had been disbarred alongside Ryan.

On the audio feed inside our SUV, the conversation streamed in crystal-clear high fidelity.

“You got the files, Thomas?” Thorne’s voice rasped through the speakers.

“Everything you asked for,” Thomas Sterling replied nervously, sliding the briefcase across the wooden table. “Complete audit trails proving Claire Reynolds manipulated foundation funds. With this, her reputation will be incinerated, and the pediatric endowment will collapse.”

“And you’re certain Ryan’s cut of the settlement will be wired to his offshore Cayman account once the blackmail demands are met?” Thomas asked greedily.

“Relax, Tom. Ryan knows how to handle a payout,” Thorne chuckled darkly. “Once Claire is forced into a multi-million-dollar silent settlement to keep the scandal quiet, you and Ryan will both get your cut.”

Julian clenched his fists so tightly his knuckles turned stark white, glaring at the monitor with pure rage. “Greedy, corrupt bastards. They actually thought they could extort us.”

“Not us, Julian. They thought they could extort *me*,” I corrected calmly, picking up my secure satellite phone. “Marcus, move in. Take them all into custody and secure the briefcase.”

Within seconds, the tactical team sprang into action. Four unmarked security SUVs roared out of the treeline, their blinding high-intensity floodlights illuminating the lodge parking room like daylight. Heavily armored tactical officers streamed through the glass doors of the dining room before Thomas Sterling or Thorne could even reach for their cell phones.

“Federal and state private security! Nobody move! Hands on the table!” Marcus’s commanding voice echoed through the lodge speakers.

On our monitor, we watched Thomas Sterling turn ghost-white, dropping his briefcase as steel handcuffs were snapped firmly around his wrists. Marcus Thorne tried to flee toward the kitchen exit, only to be smoothly intercepted and pinned face-down onto the floor by two tactical operatives.

I calmly closed my tablet, looked over at Julian, and offered a serene smile. “Well, Mr. Vance. It looks like our audit is complete.”

Julian exhaled a long breath, shaking his head in absolute awe. “Claire, you are the most dangerous, brilliant woman I have ever met in my entire life. And I have never been more attracted to anyone in my existence.”

I felt a sudden, electric warmth flush through my cheeks, realizing that the walls I had built around my heart were finally beginning to crumble.
