Chapter 13 - Leo's First Day

The morning sun poured over the manicured lawn of Oakhaven Elementary School as yellow school buses unloaded chatter-filled lines of children.
Emma knelt on the sidewalk beside the passenger door of her new hybrid SUV, adjusting the collar of Leo’s brand-new blue polo shirt. Leo had a shiny new red backpack slung over his shoulders and a pair of sturdy, comfortable sneakers on his feet that didn't have a single scuff.
"How do you feel, buddy?" Emma asked gently, brushing a stray lock of hair from his forehead.
Leo looked at the big brick building, clutching his lunchbox tightly. "A little scared, Emmy. What if the other kids know that Mom died and that Aunt Martha was in trouble?"
Emma took his small hands into hers. "Leo, look at me. You have nothing to be ashamed of. Mom loved you more than anything in this world, and everything we went through only made us stronger. You're smart, you're kind, and you belong here."
Leo took a deep breath and nodded. "Can I show my teacher the wooden truck Mom bought me?"
"You keep it right in your backpack for good luck," Emma smiled, kissing his cheek.
"Emma!"
Emma turned around. Standing near the school entrance was a group of seven parents, including several mothers who had visited Lily’s Shelf over the past two days. Beside them stood Principal Henderson, holding a welcoming folder.
"Good morning, Miss Brooks," Principal Henderson said warmly, stepping forward to shake Emma's hand. "We are so thrilled to welcome Leo to Oakhaven Elementary. And on behalf of the entire PTA, we wanted to thank you."
One of the mothers, holding a little girl's hand, stepped forward with tears in her eyes. "Emma, because of the breakfast program you funded through Maple Grocery, fifty children in this school who used to come to class on empty stomachs are now eating hot oatmeal and fresh fruit every morning."
"The whole town is behind you, Emma," another father added. "We saw what that corporate bully Vance tried to do to you on television. If you ever need anything—volunteers, childcare, anything at all—you call this community."
Emma felt a warm rush of emotion overwhelm her. "Thank you so much. That means more to me and Leo than you'll ever know."
Leo looked up at the smiling parents and kids, his anxiety evaporating into an excited grin. "See you after school, Emmy!" he shouted, waving his hand as he dashed toward the playground with the other third-graders.
Emma watched him run, feeling a profound sense of peace settle into her heart. For months, she had felt utterly alone, fighting an invisible war against poverty and despair. But here, in the heart of this town, love had built a fortress around them.

As she walked back to her car, her corporate phone chimed. It was an encrypted message from Robert Walker:
*Emma. The forensic accounting team found the maintenance ledgers for Apex Logistics. We found the mechanic who signed the inspection reports. Meet me at the hangar in twenty minutes.*
