Chapter 5 - Viral Storm

By six o’clock the following morning, the rainstorm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, amber sunrise over the town of Oakhaven.

Emma woke up in her tiny studio apartment to the sound of her phone buzzing relentlessly against the nightstand.

Buzz. Buzz. Buzz.

She rubbed her eyes, still feeling as though the events of last night were part of an elaborate, hyper-realistic dream. She reached for her cracked phone, expecting a past-due notice from the utility company or a warning from her landlord.

Instead, her lock screen was flooded with over two hundred notifications.

Text messages from high school classmates she hadn't spoken to in two years. Missed calls from unknown numbers. Direct messages on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.

Emma unlocked the screen and opened Facebook.

Right at the top of her feed was a video with over 14 million views, uploaded nine hours ago by a customer who had stood in Register Three.

The headline was written in bold, sensational letters:

**ARROGANT SUPERMARKET MANAGER FIRES TEEN CASHIER FOR BUYING MILK FOR HOMELESS MAN—BUT THE HOMELESS MAN IS A SECRET BILLIONAIRE!**

Emma watched the clip with a hand pressed against her mouth.

There she was on the screen, looking tired in her faded green polo, reaching into her wallet to hand over her last five-dollar bill. There was Franklin yelling at her, demanding her badge. There was the moment she held her head high and surrendered her name tag.

And then came the dramatic climax: the old man pulling out the black titanium phone, announcing the hostile acquisition, and Franklin's face turning entirely white.

The comment section was exploding with thousands of comments every minute:

— *"Emma Brooks is an absolute angel! We need more people like her in this world!"*

— *"Look at that manager's face when the billionaire called corporate! Pure instant karma!"*

— *"Maple Grocery better give this girl a massive promotion or I'm never shopping there again!"*

— *"I know Emma from high school—she took care of her sick mom for years. She deserves every blessing coming her way!"*

Emma sat on the edge of her unmade mattress, tears welling in her eyes. The entire world had watched the worst moment of her life turn into something extraordinary.

Suddenly, a loud knock sounded on her apartment door.

Emma jumped, throwing on a worn gray fleece jacket before walking cautiously to the door. "Who is it?"

"Emma, it's Jasmine! Open up!"

Emma unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open.

Jasmine stood in the hallway holding a box of fresh donuts and two large iced coffees, practically vibrating with excitement. Behind her stood Marcus, the nineteen-year-old stock clerk, carrying a large cardboard box.

"Have you seen the internet?!" Jasmine squealed, pushing past Emma into the small apartment. "You are trending number one worldwide on TikTok! The hashtag #EmmaAtRegisterThree has sixty million views!"

"My phone won't stop ringing," Emma said, bewildered. "Local news stations are emailing me."

Marcus set the heavy box on Emma's small kitchen table. "Mr. Walker's corporate security team dropped this off at the store at five this morning. They told us to bring it straight to you."

Emma approached the box and opened the flaps.

Inside lay a brand-new Apple MacBook Pro, a corporate iPhone with unlimited global roaming, a company credit card embossed with the name *EMMA BROOKS - DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY RELATIONS*, and a set of keys with a leather fob bearing the logo of a brand-new hybrid SUV.

"Holy cow," Marcus whispered, staring at the shiny black keys. "Emma, you're not a cashier anymore. You're a boss."

At the bottom of the box lay a handwritten note on heavy cream stationery:

*Emma,*

*The spotlight can be blinding, but remember why you stepped into it. Today at 10:00 AM, we host our first regional press conference at the Oakhaven store. Wear something you feel proud of. A corporate tailor is waiting for you downstairs.*

*— Robert Walker*

Emma touched the ink, feeling a deep sense of purpose anchor her fluttering nerves.

"Jasmine," Emma said, looking up with sudden determination. "Call your manager at Maple Grocery and tell them you're taking the day off."

Jasmine grinned broadly. "Girl, I'll take the whole month off if you're leading the charge. What's the plan?"

"We're going to transform that grocery store," Emma said. "We're going to build Lily's Shelf today. And we're going to make sure Julian Vance and Franklin never hurt another working family in this town."

Meanwhile, forty miles away on the thirty-second floor of the Vance Tower in downtown Chicago, Julian Vance hurled a crystal glass against the wall, shattering it into a thousand glittering pieces.

On the massive television screen mounted in his corner office, the viral video of Register Three was playing on CNN's morning broadcast.

"Find me something to ruin her," Vance snarled at the private investigator standing across from his mahogany desk. "I don't care if you have to dig up her dead mother's medical records or her brother's school files. Find me leverage on Emma Brooks before that press conference!"

The investigator opened a thin manila folder and slid a black-and-white photograph across the desk.

"Her younger brother, Leo Brooks, age eight," the investigator said in a raspy voice. "He lives in Riverdale with an aunt who owes thirty thousand dollars to an illegal sports gambling syndicate. The loan sharks are getting impatient."

A sinister, predatory smile spread slowly across Julian Vance's face.

"Perfect," Vance whispered, leaning back in his leather chair. "Let's see how noble Miss Brooks stays when her little brother's life is on the line."
