Chapter 6 - The Press Conference Ambush

At ten o'clock sharp, the parking lot of Maple Grocery was packed with eight news vans, satellite dishes, and a crowd of over three hundred local residents holding homemade signs that read "KINDNESS MATTERS" and "EMMA FOR PRESIDENT."

Emma stepped out of the corporate SUV wearing a tailored emerald-green blazer over a crisp white blouse. Her chestnut hair fell in soft waves over her shoulders, and though her palms were slightly damp, her chin was held high.

Beside her, Robert Walker looked sharp in a navy bespoke suit, walking with the quiet confidence of a man who had weathered a hundred corporate storms.

"Nervous?" Robert asked quietly as camera flashes began strobing across the pavement.

"Terrified," Emma admitted with a faint smile.

"Good," Robert smiled back. "Courage isn't the absence of fear, Emma. It's doing what must be done while your knees are shaking."

They stepped onto the makeshift wooden riser set up outside the supermarket's main entrance. Microphones from CBS, NBC, Fox, and local affiliates crowded the podium.

Robert stepped up to the microphones first. The crowd fell silent as reporters raised their recorders.

"Good morning," Robert began, his voice commanding. "Last night, an ordinary grocery transaction exposed an extraordinary truth about the culture of corporate America. For too long, large retailers have prioritized ruthless efficiency over basic human empathy. That era ends today for Maple Grocery."

The crowd erupted into applause.

"Today, I am officially launching the Lily Walker Community Initiative," Robert announced. "Every store in our regional network will install emergency pantry shelves, fully stocked with fresh dairy, produce, and baby essentials for any family in need—no questions asked, no judgment rendered."

He stepped back and gestured toward Emma. "And leading this nationwide transformation is our new Director of Community Operations, Miss Emma Brooks."

Cheers roared through the crowd as Emma approached the podium. Camera flashes blinded her for a moment, but she took a deep breath, adjusted the microphone, and looked out at the familiar faces of her neighbors, regular shoppers, and fellow retail workers.

"Last night, I didn't think about viral videos or job titles," Emma spoke clearly into the microphone. "I thought about my mother, who worked two minimum-wage jobs while battling cancer. I thought about the humiliation she felt every time our grocery card was declined. Nobody chooses to be poor. Nobody chooses to be hungry. Today, Maple Grocery becomes a safe haven for every struggling family in Oakhaven."

Reporters shouted over one another, raising their hands.

"Miss Brooks! Channel 4 News!" a sharp-featured reporter called out. "Are you qualified to manage a multi-million-dollar corporate budget at eighteen years old?"

Emma met the reporter's gaze without hesitation. "Qualifications aren't just printed on college diplomas. When you've lived on eleven dollars a week, you understand the value of every single penny. I know how to make resources count because my family's survival depended on it."

Before the applause could die down, a harsh, mocking voice cut through the front row.

"How touching!"

Julian Vance stepped into the cleared press circle, flanked by two bodyguards and a smirk dripping with malice. He held up a thick manila folder for the cameras to see.

"A truly heartwarming speech, Miss Brooks," Vance sneered, his voice amplified by the media microphones. "Too bad it's built on a foundation of family fraud and financial corruption!"

The crowd gasped. Robert Walker stepped forward, his eyes narrowing into cold daggers. "Julian, leave this event immediately."

"Not before the public learns the truth about their little saint!" Vance declared loudly, turning directly to the live news cameras. "This morning, our corporate audit department uncovered that Emma Brooks's legal guardian, Martha Higgins, is currently under criminal investigation for thirty thousand dollars in illicit gambling debts. And right now, Miss Brooks's eight-year-old brother is living in an unsafe, predatory environment!"

Vance turned his venomous gaze back on Emma.

"How can the public trust an eighteen-year-old girl with corporate funds when her own household is drowning in crime and child endangerment?"

The reporters erupted into a frenzy of shouted questions, flashing cameras zooming in tight on Emma's pale, shocked face.

Emma felt the ground crumbling beneath her feet. Aunt Martha? Gambling debts? Leo in danger?

For three agonizing seconds, Emma stood paralyzed. But then she looked at Vance's smug, predatory grin, and the memory of Robert's words echoed in her heart: *Courage is doing what must be done.*

Emma gripped both sides of the podium, stepped right up to the microphone, and spoke with an icy clarity that stunned the entire press corps into silence.
