The Last Carton of Milk / Chapter 27 / 30

Chapter 27 - The Golden Register Award

Winter returned to Oakhaven with a gentle, silent blanket of fresh white snow.

Inside the Brooks household, the living room was filled with the warm, aromatic scent of pine needles, cinnamon, and roasting chestnuts. In the corner stood a magnificent eight-foot Fraser fir Christmas tree, decorated with glowing gold lights, handmade popcorn garlands, and dozens of colorful ornaments.

Leo sat cross-legged on the plush carpet, carefully hanging a wooden ornament shaped like a milk carton on the center branch.

"Look, Emmy!" Leo pointed proudly. "I put Lily's ornament right in the middle where everyone can see it!"

"It looks perfect, buddy," Emma smiled, placing a tray of freshly baked gingerbread cookies on the coffee table.

The front doorbell chimed merrily.

Emma opened the door to find Robert Walker, bundled in a warm wool overcoat and scarf, holding two large wrapped gift boxes. Behind him stood Jasmine, Marcus, and Aunt Martha, carrying trays of holiday pies and singing cheerful Christmas carols.

"Merry Christmas!" the group shouted in unison, stamping the snow from their boots as they flooded into the warm, glowing house.

"Come in, come in out of the cold!" Emma laughed, taking Robert's coat.

Robert handed Leo a large box wrapped in shiny red paper. "Open this one first, young man."

Leo tore through the wrapping paper with frantic excitement, pulling out a state-of-the-art telescope with a brass tripod. "A telescope! I can look at the real stars from my blue bedroom!"

"And you'll be able to see the rings of Saturn on clear nights," Robert beamed, ruffling Leo's hair.

Later that evening, after a magnificent feast of roast turkey and apple pie, the family gathered around the fireplace with mugs of hot cocoa.

Robert raised his mug, looking around the room at the smiling faces. "One year ago tonight, I was an empty, grieving old man wandering through a rainstorm, wondering if my life had any purpose left. Tonight, looking at all of you, I have a family again. To Emma, to Leo, and to Lily's enduring light."

"To Lily!" everyone toasted, clinking their mugs together in the warm firelight.

Emma leaned her head against Robert's shoulder, feeling a profound, overflowing peace fill every corner of her soul.
