Chapter 20 - The Hostile Proxy Battle

The heavy double doors at the rear of the auditorium burst open with a resounding crash.
Ten armed Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, accompanied by the Cook County District Attorney and uniformed Chicago police officers, marched down the center aisle with handcuffs drawn.
"Julian Vance!" Lead Special Agent Harris announced through a megaphone. "You are under arrest pursuant to a federal grand jury indictment for federal corporate fraud, attempted mass chemical contamination, obstruction of justice, and second-degree manslaughter!"
Julian Vance backed away from the podium, knocking over his leather executive chair, looking wildly around the stage for an escape route. "Uncle Donald! Call our attorneys! This is an illegal ambush!"
Donald Vance didn't even look up. "You are stripped of all family trust assets, Julian. You are on your own."
Two federal agents ascended the stage, grabbed Vance by the arms, pushed him down against the mahogany table, and ratcheted steel handcuffs tightly around his wrists.
The entire auditorium erupted into thunderous applause, cheering and standing on their feet as the disgraced executive was dragged off the stage in front of twenty flashing news cameras.
As Vance passed Emma, he snarled with venomous hatred: "You ruined me, you little gutter rat!"
Emma looked him straight in the eye with calm, unshakeable dignity. "You ruined yourself the day you decided profit was worth more than human life."
Once Vance was removed from the hall, the Board Parliamentarian stepped to the center microphone.
"We will now conduct the electronic vote of confidence for Chairman of the Board," the Parliamentarian announced.
Within thirty seconds, the massive digital tote board displayed the final results:
**ROBERT WALKER: 94.2% AYE**
**JULIAN VANCE COALITION: 0.0%**
The room erupted into another standing ovation.
Robert Walker walked to the podium, embraced Emma with a warm, fatherly hug, and took the microphone.
"Thank you, shareholders," Robert said, his voice rich with emotion. "Today, Maple Grocery turns the page. We are formally establishing the Lily Walker Foundation as our permanent thirty-percent majority partner. And I hereby appoint Miss Emma Brooks as Executive Vice President of Nationwide Community Operations, with full autonomy to expand Lily’s Shelf to all four hundred locations across America!"
The applause was deafening.
Jasmine and Marcus, who were watching from the front guest box, screamed with joy, throwing high-fives to everyone around them.
