Chapter 10 - Storm over the Estate

As the police squad car pulled away with Evelyn screaming in the back seat, an eerie silence settled over our ruined living room. I stood among the scattered papers and soot, taking a deep, grounding breath. The nightmare that had plagued our household for months was finally breaking, but the legal battle to reclaim what was stolen had only just begun.

Over the next forty-eight hours, our legal team swung into full action. Richard Sterling filed for a comprehensive emergency restraining order against Evelyn Vance, prohibiting her from coming within one thousand feet of Anna, Lily, Clara, or myself. Simultaneously, he submitted the financial ledgers and audio recordings to the State Attorney General's Office of Financial Crimes.

News of Evelyn's arrest and the impending corporate investigation sent shockwaves through the local business elite. Vance Enterprises, once a respected real estate development firm built by my father, was suddenly thrown into chaos.

On Saturday morning, Julian Ashford convened an emergency board meeting at the Vance Enterprises headquarters downtown. I attended on behalf of my family, carrying the legal trust documents.

The boardroom was tense. Board members sat in nervous silence as Julian presented the evidence of Evelyn's long-standing embezzlement and the true origin of the thirty percent trust shares belonging to Anna.

"Gentlemen," Julian announced to the board, "Evelyn Vance used fraudulent company transfers to hide her debts and suppress the legal inheritance of David Miller's heir. As of this morning, the state has frozen all of Evelyn's personal assets. Under the terms of Arthur Vance's original trust agreement, Anna Miller Vance is now the legal owner of thirty percent voting control in Vance Enterprises."

A wealthy board member, Arthur Vance's former rival, frowned. "And where is Evelyn now?"

"She is currently held at the county jail on bail set at two million dollars," Richard Sterling replied, stepping up beside me. "She faces multiple felony counts, including grand theft, extortion, and residential burglary. If she attempts to use company funds for her bail, we will immediately file for corporate receivership."

The board members exchanged looks of shock and resignation. They realized that the reign of Evelyn Vance was officially over.

"We need new leadership," Julian stated, looking at me. "Mark, your father wanted you to lead this company with integrity. With Anna's shares and your architectural background, we want you to take over as Interim Chairman of the Board."

I took a deep breath, thinking of Anna resting safely in the hospital with our daughter, and thinking of the decades of corruption that had poisoned my father's legacy.

"I will accept," I declared, looking around the room. "But under one condition: Vance Enterprises will immediately establish a five-million-dollar restitution fund for the victims of Evelyn's past fraudulent land deals, starting with the estate of David Miller."

The board voted unanimously to approve the motion.

When I returned to the hospital room that evening, Anna was sitting up in bed, color having returned to her cheeks, cradling baby Lily in her arms. I sat on the edge of the bed and told her everything that had transpired at the board meeting.

Anna listened, tears of quiet relief shining in her eyes. "My father can finally rest in peace, Mark. He wasn't a failure... he was just robbed by a monster."

"And now, his daughter and granddaughter own the company he helped build," I said, gently kissing Anna's cheek.

Suddenly, a knock sounded at the door. Clara walked in, holding an official court envelope. Her face was pale.

"Mark... Richard just sent this over from the courthouse," Clara said nervously. "Evelyn's high-priced defense attorney just posted her bail through an anonymous benefactor. She's out of jail."
