Chapter 3 - Poison in the Echoes

The moment the lock clicked shut, Anna collapsed onto the entryway floor, sobbing so violently that her breath hitched in her chest. I dropped to my knees beside her, gathering her fragile frame into my arms.

"Anna! Are you okay? Did she hurt you? Is the baby moving?" I asked frantically, my hands searching her cheeks and shoulders.

Anna nodded rapidly through her tears, but her whole body was violently shivering. "I'm sorry, Mark... I'm so sorry..."

Those words cut through my heart like a dagger. She was the one who had been dragged to the sink, drenched in ice-cold water, and degraded in the dark, yet she was apologizing to me.

"Stop," I whispered, holding her face between my palms. "Do not ever apologize for her cruelty. Never again, Anna. I promise you, she will never touch you again."

I carried her to the sofa, wrapped her in thick fleece blankets, and immediately dialed the emergency maternity hotline. The nurse on duty reassured us after hearing Anna's vital signs and feeling the baby's strong movements, but advised complete bed rest and an early checkup in the morning. I brewed hot chamomile tea, sat beside Anna on the couch, and kept my hand pressed against her round belly until I felt a firm, distinct kick against my palm.

That small kick felt like an absolution I didn't deserve. I felt a surge of deep shame. How had I been so blind? How had I let my mother's subtle psychological games escalate into physical abuse right under my nose?

By 7:00 AM, my phone began vibrating continuously on the coffee table. Seventeen missed calls from Evelyn. A barrage of text messages flooded the screen, each dripping with venom.

'She planned this, Mark!'

'She broke the plate on purpose to drag you downstairs!'

'You chose a stranger over your own flesh and blood.'

'You have disgraced your father's memory.'

I stood in the morning light of the kitchen, reading every word. Instead of deleting them, I took meticulous screenshots of every text message and saved them into a secure cloud folder. Then, I typed a single, firm reply:

'You are banned from our house. You will not come near Anna. And you will never meet your granddaughter until you take full responsibility for what you did and apologize without excuses or lies.'

Her response came back within seconds:

'You are dead to me.'

I stared at the screen for a long time. Then I went into my contact list and deleted her profile picture. I kept her phone number for legal safety, but removed her face. I needed to stop remembering the loving mother of my childhood and start seeing the dangerous woman she had become.

Around noon, my phone rang again. It was my older sister, Clara, calling from two states away. Her voice was shrill with indignation. "Mark! What on earth is wrong with you? Mom called me crying hysterically! She said you threw her out onto the street in her nightgown like a dog!"

"Clara, shut up and listen to me," I said, my voice dangerously calm.

"Don't tell me to shut up! She's our mother!"

"She grabbed Anna by her hair at three in the morning and forced her head into a sink full of ice water while Anna is nine months pregnant," I stated flatly.

The line went completely dead. The anger on the other end vanished, replaced by an unsettling, heavy silence.

"Clara?" I asked.

I heard a soft, shaky intake of breath, followed by a faint sob. "She... she did that to you too?" Clara whispered.

My stomach churned. "What do you mean?"

May you like

"She didn't grab my hair," Clara choked out through tears. "But seven years ago, when I had my miscarriage with my first pregnancy... Mom came to 'help' me. She forced me to scrub her hardwood floors on my hands and knees while I was bleeding and feverish. She told me that physical pain builds discipline, and that women who complain are weak and ungrateful."

A wave of nausea washed over me. All those years, Clara and I had dismissed Evelyn's behavior as 'strictness' or 'traditional values.' We had normalized her emotional tyranny to survive it. But it wasn't tradition. It was systematic, sadistic cruelty.
