Chapter 2 - The Cold Confrontation

I did not roar with rage at first. That cold, calculated stillness was what terrified my mother the most.

I stepped slowly onto the kitchen tile while the ice-cold tap water continued to run and Anna remained bent over the sink, her shoulders quivering uncontrollably. My mother's nails were dug deep into my wife's scalp. Anna was nine months pregnant—carrying my daughter, my flesh and blood—and my own mother had waited until the dead of night to inflict this brutal humiliation upon her.

I locked eyes with my mother and uttered a single word, sharp as broken glass: "Enough."

Evelyn froze. For a fraction of a second, her mask slipped, revealing pure shock. But she quickly attempted to laugh it off, maintaining that sickening, authoritative posture she had used on me throughout my childhood. "Mark, darling, you don't understand. She was being careless with the fine china. I was simply teaching her proper respect for family heirlooms."

I took three long steps forward. "No. You were teaching me who you really are."

Her rehearsed smile vanished entirely. I reached out, grabbed Evelyn's wrist, and peeled her fingers away from Anna's hair with unyielding force. I did not break her arm, but I applied enough pressure to make her realize her dominance was over. Anna stumbled back, gasping for breath, clutching her swollen belly with both hands.

I grabbed a dry kitchen towel, wrapped it tenderly around Anna's trembling shoulders, and pulled her behind my back, positioning my body as an impenetrable shield between them.

Then I turned to face my mother. "Look at her," I commanded.

Evelyn crossed her arms, trying to look unimpressed. "She's playing the victim, Mark. She's manipulating you just like she always does."

I pointed directly at Anna's red, shivering hands. "Look at her! Look at what you did!"

"She needs to learn her place!" Evelyn snapped back.

I stepped into her personal space, towering over her. For the very first time in my life, my mother flinched and took a step back. "I said look at her!"

Silence descended on the kitchen, heavy and suffocating. Evelyn glanced at Anna for barely a second before averting her eyes to the floorboards. Deep down, she knew she had crossed a line from which there was no returning.

I reached over and shut off the faucet. The sudden silence that followed felt colder than the room itself. I reached beneath the counter, picked up the wet sponge and the sharp fragments of the broken dish, and slammed them onto the counter table.

Evelyn frowned, trying to regain her footing. "What is this dramatic performance?"

I walked out to the entryway closet, snatched her wool coat off the hook, and tossed it onto the kitchen chair in front of her. Her face drained of all color.

"You wouldn't dare," she whispered, her voice finally trembling.

I walked over to the front entrance and pulled the door wide open, letting the freezing midnight wind blow into the foyer. "Leave. Right now."

Anna whispered behind me, her voice ragged: "Mark... please... don't do this... it's okay..."

I didn't turn around. Not because I ignored her, but because I knew Anna was still trying to sacrifice her own dignity to protect me from the painful choice between mother and wife.

Evelyn stared at me in absolute disbelief. "You are throwing your own mother out in the freezing dark for that girl?"

I looked her dead in the eye. "No, Evelyn. I am throwing out a cruel woman who physically assaulted my wife."

"I gave you life!" she shrieked, her composure completely shattering.

"And she is carrying my child," I replied coldly. "If you cannot respect the life we are building, you have no place under my roof. Get out."

Evelyn grabbed her coat with violent hands. As she stepped over the threshold, she turned back, her face twisted in malice. "When that scheming snake destroys your life, don't you dare come crawling back to me!"

May you like

"If my life falls apart because I stood up for my family, at least I'll know I finally became a man," I answered without hesitation.

I slammed the heavy door and locked it.
