Chapter 9 - Fractured Loyalty

At 4:42 AM, the sharp, beautiful cry of a newborn baby echoed through Room 304.

"It's a healthy baby girl," the doctor announced with a warm smile, placing the crying, blanket-wrapped infant onto Anna's chest.

Tears welled up in my eyes as I leaned over, wrapping my arms around both of them. Anna was crying tears of immense relief, gently stroking the soft, dark hair of our daughter.

"She's perfect, Mark... she's completely perfect," Anna whispered, her voice weak but brimming with pure happiness.

"We'll name her Lily," I said softly, touching the baby's tiny fingers. "Lily Miller Vance. In honor of your father."

For the next two hours, the room was filled with peace. Clara came in, tears streaming down her face as she held her niece for the first time. Richard Sterling checked in briefly to inform us that police had been stationed outside the hospital wing to ensure Evelyn could not return.

However, the tranquility was shattered at 8:00 AM when my phone rang. It was an emergency call from our neighborhood security company.

"Mr. Vance," the security agent said urgently. "We received an intrusion alarm at your residence in Oak Creek twenty minutes ago. Our patrol unit responded and found that someone forced open your rear patio door."

My heart dropped. "Is someone in the house now?"

"We detained an older woman named Evelyn Vance inside your home," the agent reported. "She was frantically tearing open your home office safe and burning documents in your fireplace. The police are on the scene right now."

My blood boiled. Evelyn hadn't fled to hide; she had gone back to our house to destroy any remaining evidence and burn the original land deeds and corporate certificates stored in my private safe!

"Mark, go," Anna said gently from the bed, holding Lily tightly. "Clara and Richard are here with me. Go protect our home and finish this once and for all."

"I'll be back as soon as I can," I promised, kissing Anna's forehead and touching Lily's tiny cheek.

I drove back to Oak Creek in record time. When I pulled up to our house, two police cruisers were parked in the driveway with their red and blue lights flashing against the morning mist.

I burst through the front door. The living room was in chaotic disarray. Books had been ripped from shelves, drawers pulled out, and thick black smoke lingered in the air from the fireplace.

In the center of the room, handcuffed and guarded by two officers, sat Evelyn Vance. Her hair was wild, her clothes stained with soot, and her eyes burned with frantic, unhinged madness.

"Mark!" she shrieked the moment she saw me. "Tell these incompetent fools to uncuff me! I am the owner of this estate! I have the right to inspect my son's property!"

The police sergeant walked over to me. "Mr. Vance, we caught her red-handed attempting to burn financial records and corporate bonds. She broke the rear glass door to enter. Do you wish to press charges?"

I looked at the woman who had brought me into the world, the woman who had tormented my wife, abused my sister, stolen a dead man's fortune, and now stood like a common criminal in my living room.

"Yes, Officer," I said clearly and firmly. "I want to press full charges for breaking and entering, burglary, arson, and destruction of evidence."

"Mark, no! You can't do this to your mother!" Evelyn screamed, thrashing against the officers as they lifted her to her feet. "I am your blood! You owe me everything!"

I looked her straight in the eyes. "You lost the right to call yourself my mother the night you put your hands on my pregnant wife.
