Chapter 7 - Crimson Nursery

The red neon sign of Saint Jude Women's Hospital cut through the heavy rain as I pulled up to the emergency entrance. Orderlies immediately rushed out with a wheelchair, wheeling Anna straight into the labor and delivery ward.
While the medical staff prepped Anna in Room 304, I stood in the hallway with Richard Sterling, our family's long-time legal counsel who had just arrived with Clara. Richard was a veteran attorney with razor-sharp instincts, and as he flipped through the evidence from the lockbox, his stoic face turned grave.
"This is devastating, Mark," Richard whispered, closing the notebook. "If these audio tapes are authenticated—and they appear genuine—Evelyn has committed major federal crimes. Furthermore, Anna's legal right to thirty percent of the Vance trust is absolute. Evelyn has been illegally siphoning funds from that trust for over fifteen years."
"What about Frank Vance?" I asked, looking toward the main entrance glass doors. I could see the tall, shadowy figure of the private detective leaning against a pillar in the waiting room, holding a folder.
"He's trying to build a paper trail," Richard noted. "He wants to file a fraudulent emergency protective custody order the moment the baby is delivered, claiming Anna is unfit so Evelyn can gain temporary guardianship of the child."
"Not on my watch," I said, my teeth clenched.
Suddenly, the elevator doors at the end of the hallway opened with a chime. Stepping out, dressed in an elegant black trench coat with her hair perfectly styled, was Evelyn Vance. She walked down the sterile hallway with absolute confidence, as if she owned the hospital.
"Mark," Evelyn said smoothly, stopping five feet from me. "I heard my granddaughter is on her way. As the family matriarch, it is my duty to be here."
I stepped forward, blocking her path to Room 304. "You were explicitly told never to come near my wife again, Evelyn. Get out before I have security throw you out."
Evelyn chuckled softly, a sinister sound. "Oh, Mark. Still so naive. You think you can banish me? Frank!"
Frank Vance stepped up beside her, opening his folder to reveal a draft of an emergency court petition. "Mr. Vance, we have statements from neighbors claiming your wife has been exhibiting erratic, unhinged behavior. We have records showing her medical history. If you resist, CPS will take the infant into state custody the moment she leaves the birth canal."
Evelyn smirked, leaning in close to me. "All you have to do, Mark, is sign over power of attorney for the family trust to me. Do that, and I'll drop the petition. Anna can keep the baby, and you two can leave Oak Creek forever."
I looked at my mother, seeing the absolute monstrous corruption inside her soul. She was using my unborn child as a bargaining chip to save her stolen fortune.
Instead of panicking, I slowly pulled my phone from my pocket and pressed 'play' on a recording app.
My father's voice, loud and clear, echoed down the hospital hallway:
'Sign the papers, Arthur. Keep your mouth shut, and let me manage the money...'
Evelyn's smirk instantly vanished. Her face went deathly pale, her eyes widening in sheer horror.

"Where... where did you get that?" she stammered, backing away.
"Your reckoning has arrived, Evelyn," I said cold as ice.
