Chapter 6 - The Panic Sets In

By Friday evening, the pressure was breaking Daniel apart. Clara and I watched financial news reports highlighting sudden stock instability at Mercer Development.
"He's panicking," Clara said, pouring tea. "Do you think he'll sign?"
"Men like Daniel would rather burn everything than surrender," I replied. "Which is why he'll lash out first."
My phone buzzed. Unknown number. I answered on speaker.
"You think you've won?" Vanessa’s voice shrieked through the line. "If you don't drop this, we'll destroy you permanently!"

"Thank you, Vanessa," I said smoothly. "Rachel is recording this witness intimidation for the federal prosecutor."
A sharp gasp, and the line went dead. The trap was closing.
