Chapter 17 - The Collapse of the Network

The arrest of Special Agent David Thorne inside the Department of Justice headquarters sent seismic shockwaves through federal law enforcement agencies nationwide. Within hours, a coordinated sweep authorized directly by the Attorney General’s office led to the simultaneous detention of twelve corrupt officials across the Chicago and Washington field offices.
Sitting safely in a secure debriefing room alongside Sarah Jenkins and Marcus Vance, I watched live news broadcasts stream rolling coverage of the sweeping federal arrests. Headlines flashed in bold red letters across the screen: *‘Deep-State Corruption Ring Exposed: Miller Syndicate Tapped into Federal Enforcement.’*
“It’s over,” Sarah breathed, leaning back in her chair with a profound sense of relief. “With Thorne and his superiors in custody, Margaret has officially lost her shield. There’s no one left to bury her indictments.”
“Don’t celebrate just yet,” Marcus warned, staring grimly at his tablet screen. “Margaret is still sitting in the county holding facility awaiting trial. And a cornered viper strikes hardest when it has nowhere left to run.”
My phone buzzed against the table. It was an incoming call from an unblocked number—the direct landline of Margaret Miller’s holding cell.
With a steady breath, I pressed accept and put it on speakerphone so Sarah and Marcus could hear.
*‘You played a magnificent hand, Clara,’* Margaret’s voice echoed through the room, shockingly calm, devoid of any panic or hysteria. *‘You climbed out of the mud, outsmarted my entire network, and brought down an empire.’*
“You built that empire on blood, extortion, and ruined lives, Margaret,” I replied, my voice hard as iron. “And now you’re going to die in a cage.”
A low, chilling chuckle crackled through the speaker. *‘Cages are only as strong as the locks that hold them, my dear. But before this story concludes, there is one final truth you deserve to know about your precious husband.’*
My breath hitched. “What are you talking about?”
*‘Daniel didn’t just abuse you because he was cruel, Clara,’* Margaret purred, her voice dripping with sinister amusement. *‘He did it because he knew whose daughter you really are. Ask me who your biological father was before you celebrate your victory.’*

The line went dead with a sharp click.
