Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Perfect Mask

The flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers painted our upscale suburban living room in violent neon streaks. Neighbors peeked through parted window blinds across the street, whispering behind glass panels as Daniel was led out in handcuffs.
Margaret was screaming, her face flushed with righteous fury as she jabbed a manicured finger at Detective Vance. “This is a monstrous lie! My son is a pillar of this community! He is a senior partner at Miller & Vance Financial! You can’t just drag him away like a common criminal because this ungrateful, hysterical woman made up stories!”
Detective Vance didn’t even blink. He flipped open his notepad with practiced calm. “Mrs. Miller, interfering with a police investigation and accessory to intimidation are federal headaches you don’t want. I suggest you step back and contact a defense attorney.”
Dr. Morris turned her attention to Margaret, her professional coolness acting like a shield against the older woman's hysteria. “The medical records documenting severe blunt force trauma over a period of thirty-six months speak for themselves, Margaret. The police department has copies of every hospital visit, every photograph, and sworn statements detailing repeated abuse.”
Margaret turned her venomous gaze directly onto me, stepping forward until I could smell the expensive Merlot on her breath. “You vicious, scheming little bitch,” she hissed, her voice venomous. “You think you’ve won? Daniel built this life. He built you! Without him, you’re nothing—a penniless orphan from a broken family with zero pedigree. He will destroy you in court, strip you of every cent, and leave you rotting in the gutter.”
I didn’t flinch. I kept my chin high, adjusting the rigid plastic brace around my fractured wrist. “Margaret, your son built his empire on embezzlement, corporate fraud, and offshore shell accounts. And I have the financial ledger sitting in my cloud storage right now.”
Margaret’s face went entirely white. For a split second, the fierce, arrogant matriarch looked terrified. “What... what are you talking about?”
“Ask him about the corporate accounts in the Cayman Islands,” I whispered, stepping past her toward the kitchen to grab my coat. “Or better yet, ask his business partner, Richard Vance, who happens to be the brother of the detective who just arrested him.”
The front door clicked shut as the police cruiser pulled away into the night, leaving Margaret standing alone in the center of the shattered wine puddle, trembling with a sudden, dawning horror.
My phone vibrated in my pocket. It was a text message from an unknown number: *“The package has been delivered to the federal prosecutor's office. You made the right choice, Clara.”*

I stared at the screen, letting out a long, slow breath I felt like I’d been holding for three agonizing years. This was only chapter two. Daniel thought he owned the world, but he had no idea that I had spent the last two years quietly learning how to be his executioner.
