Chapter 9 - The Underground Alliance

The dimly lit underground parking garage beneath an old industrial warehouse on the outskirts of the city smelled of exhaust fumes and damp concrete. A single flickering overhead bulb cast erratic shadows over a vintage black Lincoln Continental parked in the farthest corner.
The rear door opened, and out stepped Marcus Vance—no relation to the disgraced Richard or the detective—a legendary private investigator who had spent thirty years unearthing the darkest secrets of Chicago’s elite before retiring from the mainstream circuit.
Marcus leaned against the side of the car, lighting a cigarette and watching me through narrowed, weathered eyes as I stepped out of my Uber. “Clara Miller. Word on the street is you just took down the biggest financial titan in the Midwest and put Richard Vance behind bars. People usually pay hitmen to do that, not filing cabinets.”
“I didn’t come here for small talk, Marcus,” I said, stepping into the dim light and handing him a thick flash drive. “Margaret Miller is out on bail, she’s weaponizing the grandfather’s trust, and she’s already threatening my family.”
Marcus took the flash drive between two calloused fingers, turning it over slowly. “Margaret is an old-school corporate predator. She eats weaker wolves for breakfast. What makes you think I can touch her?”
“Because thirty years ago, before she married into the Miller dynasty, Margaret Sterling was involved in the sudden, suspicious disappearance of her first business partner, who happened to own fifty percent of Sterling Shipping,” I replied evenly, my voice cutting through the damp air.
Marcus stopped turning the flash drive. His eyes snapped up to lock onto mine, a sudden spark of intense curiosity flashing in his gaze. “That cold case was buried by the district attorney back in nineteen-eighty-eight. Everyone knew she did it, but there wasn't a shred of physical evidence left.”
“There wasn't,” I agreed, pulling a second, smaller envelope from my coat pocket. “Until I spent the last three nights going through Daniel’s private basement safe behind his home library. He kept his mother’s old memorabilia—including the original coroner’s report, unredacted bank transfer slips, and a signed confession letter from the original lead detective admitting he took a bribe to close the file.”
Marcus let out a low, gravelly whistle, a slow, appreciative grin spreading across his weathered face. “Well, I’ll be damned. You didn’t just bring a knife to a gunfight, Clara. You brought a nuclear launch code.”
“I want her arrested before she can harm my family,” I said firmly. “Can you get this to the federal grand jury by tomorrow morning?”
Marcus pocketed the flash drive and the envelope, sliding the car door open. “Consider it done, Clara. Margaret Miller’s golden cage is about to become her permanent tomb.”

As the Lincoln’s engine roared to life and it sped away into the night, I felt a fleeting sense of hope. But deep down, I knew predators like Margaret never went down quietly. The real bloodbath was only just beginning.
